I need to replace the fin box for a Bic Techno 283 that uses trim fins. Where can a get it? I could find other type of fin boxes in the Internet (power, deep tuttle, etc.), but not this one . If anybody knows where to get one (new or used), let me know. I would be happy with one salvaged from an old Bic board. Thanks! |

Might mention where you live.
I"m in Berkeley area, and lots of free throwaway Bic boards around the Marina. |

I am in Kansas City. It would be nice to be able to salvage the fin box from an old Bic board.
Just to clarify for the other responses, I don't need the fin, need the fin box to replace it my board (Techno 283). |

I seriously doubt that you'll be able to find a Trim Box design finbox, and as far as being able to salvage an existing fin box out of a board, it would be a very ugly job. What I suggest would be buying a Waterat Tuttle box. Except for two boards that I have that have a US box, all my boards have the Waterat finbox. I don't think that you would regret making the change. Of course though, you would need to buy new fin(s).

Even BIC changed the Techno to be Deep Tuttle instead of Trim box. I would go with that if I were you.
Have fun! |

If your fin quiver is all trim box, it's understandable to want to replace the same box. If you are willing to extract a box from a discarded board and do the labor necessary to install it, why not take out the old box and repair it? That is, as long as it's not totally trashed and you have the sliders still. If it's just cracked, you can extract it, epoxy it back together, wrap it in carbon and or glass and reinstall it. I've even repaired small cracks in place- not ideal, but kept an old board up and running without leaks.. Good luck! |

As suggested in an earlier post you could replace the box with a Waterat Tuttle fin box. Another option are the boxes made by Chinook. http://www.chinooksailing.com/products/index.php?cPath=64
Chinook makes both a Tuttle and a Powerbox version that would work. They are slightly heavier than the Waterat Tuttle version but they are quite a bit cheaper. Also you may find that free ride fins are more available for the Powerbox.
However since the Tuttle box has parallel sides like the Trim box you may be able to more easily convert the Bic Trim box fins to fit a Tuttle box. Google Tuttle Fin Box Dimensions and you will find some images of the Tuttle fin boxes along with dimensions. |
