Little beats my old 2 Honda Civics, one '85, one '85.
6 windsurf boards, 2 surfboards, 14 sails, 4 booms outside, 4 masts hung upside down on the racks, 3 trips to HoodRiver and 3 to mid coastal Baja.

The 1986, from '86 till it got 307,000 in '99.
Then the '85, had 54,000 on it in '99, died at 289,000 in '07.
Both got 35mpg with the gear in town.
Both averaged 25 on the long trips.
Neither had an oil change after 100,000 miles. Neither motor died, but the body did, as did the motor mounts.

Sounds like you're saying just about any vehicle that can take racks, can work as a WS vehicle, and the Civic has the plus of great MPGs and not needing oil changes after 100K Very Happy .
I saw your setup on your old Civic, LeeD, with 4 boards + stuff when I used to sail the PI dog park awhile back. I can only imagine the pile on top with 6 boards!
I don't think they make gorge racks anymore, so you'll have to make a custom set for a future Civic.

I never like the gorge attachements for Thule rackets. Too heavy, always there, more wind drag with the gaps.
I lived in my Civic from '07 thru '09 also, with 5 sails inside, 3 masts, and 2 booms. 3 boards on the roof rack.
Taking out the side and backseats, the sleep space is 7' long, 30" wide, and about 28" tall.

Hi Lee D,

So you got 207,000 miles additional on that Civic '86 without an oil change at all during those miles???!!!

Think what you could have gotten with an oil change or two!!!

Was it burning oil during that time so that you were adding new oil occasionally?

Both Honda's were burning about 1/4 quart every 20,000 after the initial 100K's, so I just kept it topped off.
NEITHER had motor problems at the end. Both only had rust and rusted motor mount, tranny mount, axle mount problems from rust.
Both were always parked outside in the salt air of SanFranciscoBay.

And no oil change for ever for the second HondaCivic.
My g/f has the oil changed in her '06GTI every 3,000 miles. I'm shocked!

Regular oil changes using synthetic oil on my old Vanagon helped things greatly. The same is true on my Chevy Van. What you got to watch out with VWs is the electrical and other nagging minor problems. I have to say though that with all the historical maintenance problems with VWs, I'm still drooling over a Jetta TDI Sportwagen.

Hey Chandler, look what we just got. Its not going to replace the GMC for my short runs to Berkeley Marina or Pt Isabel, but we plan on using it for longer trips. Besides, its really fun to drive. (its an 86, in really good condition...well taken care of)
