In Kanaha if you get blown downwind like I did when I took out my wife's 47 liter board and 2.7 sail, you wind up on canoe beach or kite beach.
Booties not needed and rarely worn except by tourists.
You can't sail on North Shore before 11AM to give the divers a chance.

As said, better to stay with Kanaha and Kihei, Pavilions for windsurfing.
Sprecks can be OK, but narrow road in, limited parking, less friendly sailors.
Surfing...you can surf Kanaha on a calm day, but shifty waves and shallow reefs, watch tides.
Better to drive to S shore, LahinaHarbor, or !,000Peaks just where the highway turns towards Lahina. If you turn left, the waves get stronger and closer to shore, breaking harder and some closing out.
I'm sure you know HonoluaBay is at the end of the road. That is experts only, and you'll get vibed there. But cool to check out on a big WNW swell, and see some real surfing at the most famous spot on Maui...from shore.
And don't forget to check out Jaws if the swell becomes monstrous.

Flying to Maui with luggage. I know for sure I will have to check my shark cage. But can I carry on my tennis rackets and windsurf harness? Sorry, I don't get out much, thanks in advance for replies. Oh, and any guesses on wind happening there the next couple of weeks? Thanks again.

I hope you already have a rental car for your trip. I can't find one for December 27-Jan 4. Any advice? This is the 1st time this has happened to me in 20 years.

There are at least three Kanaha sailors who rent vans on the local market.
Not new cars. They advertise by word of mouth and on Craigslist.
Try Kimos also.
If that doesn't work get back to me if you want. There are cars out there.
Tourism in Maui shook off that slump and is setting records right now.

Capt. Greg always wear them and some locals wear them to. Wink
If you decide not to wear booties make sure never step on reef ... even accidentally (water on reef just 2' deep in many spots).

Lots of folks at Kanaha wear booties (even some locals), so you won't be out of place there. A bad reef cut will ruin your trip, so they are recommended.
The pros are the guys that won't wear them (but they are paid to look cool Cool and they all know where the shallow coral heads are, cuz duh,, they sail there every day,,, you and I don't).
But don't listen to me, I'll be there with my tourist kook helmet and shorty wetsuit too. Laughing I get cold there in December without it.

The local spear fishing lobby is strong on Maui so no sailing before 11am is a law.
