I've been watching this thing unfold for years. it's all about whether Pt Reyes was intended to be a "wilderness" and how that is defined. It was a 1960s concept of protecting the land from development and farms and ranches were seen as part of the "working landscape". The impacts from the oyster farm seem mininal to zero, especially compared to all the cattle ranches that occupy the Park. So will the NPS kick the dairy farmers off next? Seems hypocritical to do otherwise.

Like sailing on the bay? Thank a radical tree hugger. Or as some prefer, environazis.

yes, a fine example of activists succeeding in preserving something the way it has been for 100 years.

You're wrong Victor. The Bay is in much better shape than it was 100 years ago--it is getting better and there is more than a hundred times as much access as there was when these efforts started. There are still substantial threats--did you already forget the proposal to create new runways at SFO? And the partnership between the Sierra Club and windsurfers to fight that proposal?

There are certainly people on all sides of issues that are unreasonable from time to time. But it would be foolish to discount them as potential allies.

mac. i'm agreeing. a small group of concerned, local individuals succeeded in preserving a portion of the bay the way it was.

it should also be noted that in the above case due process was followed before anything happened, an act of congress on which our elected representatives voted.

i'm complaining about a much larger group with no oversight taking control with very little concern for the local population.

Victor--like I said, I stayed neutral on this. I have a dear old friend, a major conservationist in Marin county behind MALT, who asked me to sign a petition. Any time the local staff show serious enough bias to get rebuked by the National Academy of Science there are problems with perspective. But I fear that is also true on the other side--apparently Feinstein put the provision that the NPS could consider extending the lease in a budget rider and it wasn't in the original wilderness designation. With Boxer, the former county supervisor on the other side, Salazar knew there was a lot of heat on him, no easy out, and I'm pretty sure the decision was carefully made and reflected the law.

I do think that agriculture should be preserved; there's way too much land out there, and to small a park budget for it to be managed without grazing leases. And there are powerful conservation forces who support that. Aquaculture in the lagoon is another, and more difficult issue. It is a spectacular place, particularly when there are a few hundred white pelicans wheeling around.
