What caught my attention (after coming to grips that they went that fast), was that the hydodynamic lift part of the boat is dead simple. A stepped v flat planing surface! This is something I've always wanted to mess with but never did for windsurfing, stepped hulls.
I'm a big fan of this project, as proud as I used to be that windsurfers were the fastest sailors on the water, I also knew that were operating on a pretty much pure brute force approach. I love the methodical scientific approach they've taken to this. And from what I can see they'll just keep going faster, unfortunately for us, kites and windsurfers are pretty much finished as contenders for the outright record.
This thing is approaching ice boat speeds now. |
