Does it really matter? Kites are fast on the water,

I don't know. Powerboats are fast on water too. Laughing

Very few windsurfing accidents happen where you skull get's hit.
Most of the time, you face get's the impact. How many helmet protect your face?
And if it does, how do you protect your neck and hands?

What's so amazing to me about AA's technique at the end was how it illustrated the importance of hip control when windsurfing. Before bearing off, he carved upwind then down to bring the board under him, then pushed forward with his front hip to commit to the rail. Beautiful.

There is more than one kind of record. The official worlds record requires the timing be done by a special team from Europe who charge a lot to be there.
The run is timed over a set of marks on the course, not usually the part where you went the fastest
Wind doesn't blow for days, then the costs pile on, until you give it up and release the timing crew.
Next day it blows like hell.
The kiters have focused on GPS records which allow you to just sail around until the unit on your arm shows that you had a fast little burst somewhere.
In the Eric Beale Speed Series and the Navman Speed Trials here in Maui we use the GPS method to determine the Maui Speed Record.

Can't tell. Appears boom is under the tail of the board.
Is that a single rear strap? Like a winger rounded pin tail of yore?

Yep. The cutaway at the tail there shows the little jet pump engine that goes by the name of "kitekatcher".

You mean other than the fact that the board and sail in this picture are different than the board in the video?
