VESTAS Sailrocket 2 blew open the old record of Robbie Douglas on a kite by ripping through 500 meters at an average of 59.23 knots, with peak of over 63! All in around 25 kts of wind.

bet he can go at least another 5 knots if the sail wasn't canted over so far |

It is a very cool craft and the geometry of the drive forces (sail CE, CLR and CB) have more in common with a kiteboard than a traditional sailing craft. They can essentially pour on as much power as the craft can handle without inducing any heeling moment (which is why the rig is canted). Awesome to see that there are people out there still persuing the outright speed record in creative ways.

the rig being canted puts force in a direction other than forward; bet he can go at least 5 knots faster |

If the windward canting of the rig can be adjusted, and I'd think it can, then Paul has windsurfing to thank for that!
If more money could be poured into re-engineering the mast to eliminate stays and exposed cables, and he could close his cockpit into a completely faired hull/fuselage, he'd cut his form drag by quite a bit. Sticking that Go-Pro into the stream does not help.
F1 cars have a number of NACA foils that serve as external shapes for internal camera mounts. They add very little drag, so little that some teams run them even when no camera is mounted. I'd imagine that's low on the priorities, but every bit of drag adds up to a larger total. _________________ Support Your Sport. Join US Windsurfing!

In 2016 I plan to replace the landing gear on my ASW19 with a single water ski, I figure I'll hit about 80kts over 500 meters in no wind, before I sink. |
