Will be one week on the island.
Is wind really that bad as stats on windfinder show it? |

It blows 6.o a lot and good waves.
That seems light if your big sail is a 5.0 and your big board is a 74 liter like my gear. A lot to do on Maui when the wind doesn't blow. |

predecting wind in the winter months on Maui is useless - it may blow 4.2/70l some if the days you are here and it may not blow at all. Serious windsurfers from around the globe come in the winter to catch the days it does blow because the surf is up in the winter. Point being many others consider it to be worth waiting out the lulls. With only a week it is to hard to predict - hope you score. By the way the wind finder average wind speeds are way below what is on the water. - so don't get to discouraged. |

Thank you guys
Decided to try my luck given that Hawaiian was selling tickets as $322 roundtrip - close to what I spend on a typical Gorge weekend trip...
Does no wind on the north coast mean no wind at all on the entire island?
Or there are some plan B options?
What's a good place to learn SUP surfing (and not destroy rental board )? |

On the South coats the wind is different but less in Dec as well.
In Kihei
You can rent an SUP in many locations, inc some right across the street from the beach so you can walk over and bring it back same day without the hassle of hauling it around. |

wrt SUP I was thinking more of learning to surf waves if no wind.
Last time I've been there what they rented on streets was large cruisers.
But what and where to rent is not an issue. It is where to find a safe place to play with waves an a SUP. For now I assume Kanaha |

there are some good surf/ SUP/ Dive school's (shops) in kihei. I used them this year in the morning before the wind/ chop would come up. you can rent or take a leeson right off the beach. plus there are tons of shops across the street. |

There is cove at intersection of S. Kihey rd. and Kanani rd. It's extremely easy to learn SUP surfing in that place. There is SUP rental and lessons right there. Early morning is the best time. _________________ Andrew

Compare the Kihei and north shore graphs from the last few days. Averages near 30 for Kihei, teens to low 20s on north shore. When the Kanaha wind direction is about 42 degrees or less, and the speed is in the mid-teens or more, it usually means strong wind for Kihei.

In winter sometimes Kihei can be better than Kanaha, especially when the wind direction is from the south or SW (kona winds) or northerly as mentioned already by Karen B (aka Jeff ). |
