Overtightening can distort an O-ring, making it leak ... yet another reason I (almost) never mess with them.

The seal surface at the vent must be smooth with no dings in it for it to get a good seal.

I had a leak I couldn't locate and it turned out to be a scratch n the seal surface. Also the seal surface could be dirty.

Mix up some soapy water and on a hot day spray the board down with the vent closed to detect a leak.

Also the last leak I fixed turned out to be under the deck pads.

I have sucked a lot of water out of a board with a shop vac when the valve was forgotten. I put silicone rubber on mine to seal it up. If I need to open it the silicone will come out.
