Im starting a winter project Very Happy Trying to get the gross chipping paint off of the quatro. I tried acetone, which turns the clear coat into a gooey mess and slooowly removes the paint under it with a lot of rubbing...not ideal. Im trying to avoid any sanding on the bottom.Does anyone have suggestions for paint removal from epoxy?

Why do you want to avoid sanding? Solvents will do more damage.

Solvents will not affect the epoxy- use chemical stripper and rags...just be sure to clean thoroughly after- soap and water then alcohol which removes any trace of water- then repaint.

I use a sander.

a little palm one, takes paper about 4 1/2 " square.

I avoid chemicals for a multitude of reasons.

Chemicals aren't my first choice either- but the poster seemed wary of mechanical means- my first choice would be a sharp scraper- but it takes a practiced hand. I wanted to make the point though that solvents do not touch cured epoxy- at least in my 30 years of working with it I haven't found one that does. And sanding paint and finish has it's own drawbacks with toxic dust and the possibility of going deeper than intended.

A second vote for a palm sized orbital sander. Leaves a nice finish
to repaint to, if you use the right grit sandpaper.

Recently a guy gave me a sail. His son had spray painted graffiti all over it. I couldn't see through the vinyl window. I spent two hours cleaning it. Acetone worked to remove the paint as well as anything else. It did require a fair bit of elbow grease though. I thought that the acetone had deformed the vinyl as it was sort of dimpled and not a perfectly smooth sheet. However, it rigged up flat as a pancake with the proper amount of tension. Nevertheless, the window still isn't clear. I'm going to try and remove the spots and films left from the cleaning. I really do think that the acetone under pressure from my hands had deformed the sheet of vinyl. Chemical solutions to your problems can often be the best, but using them is an art not so much a science. Brake fluid will take paint off like no tomorrow, but I have never used it except on a matrix of cement.

removal from sails is a different book.

Not done any paint off sails, plenty of stickers, GOO Gone removal works ok, I usually heat the sticker , but only with a hair dryer not a heat gun, and Simple Green helps , not a nice project and elbow grease and time aplenty.

I don't care so much for the orbital sander, I use a finishing sander which accepts cut down sheets of paper which clamp on. The orbital sander takes round stick on paper, more $ , and less control, least mine is with no provision for speed adjustment.
