From the Maui County Facebook page:
Shark Attack Closes Kanaha Beach Park
This morning at around 7:30 off of Kite beach at Kanaha Beach Park the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) confirmed that a shark attacked a stand-up paddler. The paddler was able to strike the shark with his paddle after he fell into the water when the shark bit his paddle board. The paddler was not injured.
County of Maui Ocean Safety officers and DLNR have closed the beach one mile on either side of the area, ranging from the mouth of Kahului Harbor mouth to the Kahului side of Spreckelsville. Officers will continue to monitor the area throughout the day.The area will be closed through sunset and re-evaluated in at sunrise. |

I would be interested to hear more. It is not uncommon to see small sharks outside the reef at Kanaha and Sprecks but have never heard of them interacting with humans. South Shore--much different story. Big Tigers, and I have seen them cruising along the near-shore reef at sunset. |

>The life guards chased the surfers (including Fares) out of the water at Kanaha this morning. The shark missed the guy, but bit his board. Fares said the bite marks on the board were huge. I thought SUP's were safe... Guess not. |

Heard there were a lot of angry tourists today. Super windy and a 6' swell and they closed the beach for a 6-8 foot shark attack on an SUP. Not saying it was a bad decision, but some guys just aren't that worried about a small shark when its blowing 25+. I would have gone in, and prayed for the wind to stay good....?
Glad he wasn't hurt! |

Good sailing day, for sure. Big crowds at Euro beach/Sprecks.
Shark wouldn't have stopped me at Kanaha. _________________ __________________________________________

on site report from yesterday:
"The life guards are like prison bulls today. The conditions are so perfect everyone is just staring out at the water. Every so often someone makes a break for it all the way up at Sprecks or down by the sewer treatment plant. Then the life guards go flying out on their jet skis to bring them back. Pretty funny." |

Could be that some of those guys will head out to sea upwind to uppers. Not sure that's safe either. Best to have 40 sailors ripping in and out. Would probably scare the shark off.
Who knows where the shark is today. Could be Hana for all we know. |

When's the last time a buffet scared you away?
I still have the best pin-up photo I've ever seen, and no one's ever objected its presence on my office wall. It's of the evening buffet of a luxury cruise ship. |

The shark bite was at the sewage plant area of the harbor, known for sharks. It is right next to kite beach but they stay clear of that area.
The interesting part was that he bit the board and that knocked the guy off right on top of the shark. A sharks teeth angle back so it is not easy for a shark to let go of a solid object he bites into. It kept clamped on while the guy flailed at it with his paddle.
Normally your instincts tell you not to worry about sharks unless you fall on your own.
The tako spearfishermen and sailors who work on the dive boats have some news for you.
There are sharks under you a lot when you sail here, some huge.
Last week a friend of mine swam from the island of Lanai to Maui with five other people. They got in the chase boat for a few minutes when they saw a really big tiger shark, then finished the swim.
Afterwards he noted that the big danger in this was driving to Lahaina in traffic. |
