My son and I go out to Peahi when it's big. One day, Laird was alone, trying to paddle in to a monster. No tow in. He finally made one. It looked like he was on a 12' gun. My son and I were alone, so it was a cool experience. Not sure I'd like to be there with 500 other guys. I've heard when its really big, the highway is bogged down in Paia.

Kudo's to Laird !!
Back when he was younger, he was never acknowledged to be one of the big wave crew ...the paddle in big wave crew.
He led the towin crowd, he windsurfed pretty well, but he really only rode bigger Hanalei, with few days at Wiamea and certainly not a standout.
Guess like wine, you can get better with age.
