Hi !
This is Yvan, you friend from the Middle-East. I bet you missed me.
I just returned from France (the only country where people are madder than me) where I bought a 7.5 sqm sail.
I just realized my current boom (160mm to 210mmm) was too short. I need an extra 9mm.
Has anyone drilled extra holes on the boom sliding extension? Apart from drifting into iranian waters, what are the risk involved? |

I wouldn't do it. Just like with mast extensions and masts, you need so much insertion or overlap to establish a sound bearing surface. Otherwise, you risk failure in the boom arm/rear extension interface. Time to buy a bigger boom. Maybe an aluminum one to keep the cost down. |

It was designed to slide out so far, the holes only go so far for a reason.
You need a longer boom.
PS you would lose the bet.
PSS your travels are limited somewhat France is tame _________________ K4 fins

Using a mast ferrel as an example, you should be able to safely drill a hole as long as the boom extension end is at least 5 x (the diameter of the tubing) into the boom arm. If the extension tube diameter is 2.5 cm, then it needs to extend into the arm at least 12.5 cm. |

I would agree with your assessment.
The HotSails Maui boom that was most accessible to measure, has its last hole exactly 12.5cm as you stated, which would mean DON"T drill any more,
YMMV _________________ K4 fins

As in masts, dont drill booms.
You can drill base of fins or deck pads if you want, that's it. |

Hi !
It is nice to wake up with all these suggestions.
It is not that I can't afford it (I am sitting on oil), it is just that I want to use the boom to its core. That is my style of recycling.
I am in the office today. Here, we work on sunday (but Friday is off).
I will try this afternoon, and let you know the outcome.

oops I did it again.
I don't know what that Taiwanese boom is made of.
The plastic cleat was worn-out after 6 sessions at sea, but my drill (3,000 rounds per minute) was not powerful enough to drill a hole and I almost lost my hand in the process.
I found a small hardware shop with heavy duty tools to do it for me.
Double serving of kebabs for everyone if it works tomorrow. |

Watch out for the mines in the Straights of Hormuz....Doesn't someone out there have a large aluminum boom you can send him? |

Hi !
It worked on one on side of the boom only (so, only half serving of Kebab for everyone). The cogs would not fit on the other side.
Then, i was left with two options. I either returned to the shop to adjust it, or I switched to my old boom and a shorter sail for immediate sailing.
Guess what I did. I chose the second option. I just could not wait to sail. I will be on a business trip to Europe in two weeks and I will buy a new boom with the right lenght.
Considering the time I spent on this - unresolved - issue, it ended up being more expensive than buying a brand new boom.
However, my board stirred quite an interest from the Russian crowd at the hotel. |
