We have been doing a lot of windsurf fishing the last few years in La Ventana Baja with 85% success rate. Mostly hooking up on Sierra aka Spanish Mackarell or Sea Bass. Just got my buddy in Oahu hooked on it and he is reeling in all sorts of fish. Its a ton of fun and gets you out there on light wind days. Also great for hooking beginners since you use a big board and don't need much skill. Great way to get less than enthusiastic kids to pile on the hours.

Here goes a little step by step of how its done. We use a Cuban Yoyo or hand reel instead of a pole (cheaper and never breaks or tangles) and a fake squid.

Windsurf Fishing 101 with Tyson Poor.

Grab a SUP, A sail and one of Tyson’s many reel set ups, (maybe some sun screen, beer, lycra…you may be out a while, and an ipod….oh wait sunglasses.. hat and needle nose pliers.

Loop the end of the Cuban yoyo (hand line reel) around the mast base…set the Yoyo on the board and sail out to deep water.

Drop the sail sit on the board and let the line off the Yoyo by tilting it towards the water.

Uphaul and start sailing, when you reach a good speed pick up the large diameter bungee cord off the deck of the board with your back-hand.

Place the connection between the bungee cord and the fishing line between the fingers on your back hand like a cigarette…….Sail.

When you feel a hit, jerk the line to set the hook.

Then let the fishing line slide through your hand a grab a hold of the bungee cord which will act as the drag.

Tyson says it is a good idea to sail with the fish while holding the bungee for about 30 yds to tire out the fish.

Then Yell FISH ONNNNN!!! To your buddy and drop the sail… sit on the board… and reel it in.

DINNER IS SERVED…..Gratis.

Hey all, sorry to resurrect a very old thread, but I am considering this set up for salmon fishing. The season here is hot. I’m expecting to go out at Stinson Beach. Can you go into more detail as how the bungee cord attaches to the fishing line, and the Cuban yo-yo?

Thanks,
