The difference is price and the way they drive, incidence of repair and cost to repair.
While the newer Honda s are quite nice, I have now my 2nd Chrysler Town & Country. 1st a 03 this a 06. They both are/were dedicated windsurf transport vehicles, and as such have proved to be excellent. |
I rented a T&C down in Florida and really liked the Stow&Go seating. Billions were invested in engineering and deploying the Stow&Go. Honda and Toyota could learn a thing or two from Chrysler! I put a new bed and boxspring, couch, table and mucho other stuff in the back in a single trip. Sweet!
Measured 118 " (roughly 300 cm) on the 2012 Odyssey from console to back for with some slack space. I guess you could get something longer in there with the nose facing the rear as the back door encroaches a bit on the rear area. I'm sure something longer will fit over the shotgun seat against the dash/windshield but am thinking of the significant other/receipient of insurance/wife, and of course safety.
Picking it up tomorrow with the hopes that the mileage and re-sale value will hold up over time.
Plus I am retiring the 1999 Dodge Ram custom van with the gas guzzling V8 and dreading of when it will fail while I'm trying to get my sesh tude going! (The thought is always there in my caffeine induced drive down the GSP)!.
Tks for your thoughts and input!
Wish me luck and GLTA! |

this is the way my van is set up
I can hold 4 boards on the rack. 2 on top of the box, left side vertical, and a shit load of sails.
masts are under the PVC board rack, and are easy accessible.

U2U2U2,
Any problem with those fins moving around anytime you hit the brakes hard? |

By the time the fins move, the car has suffered catastrophic collision.
I put 14 fins the same way, and they never move. OTOH, I'm an old fart and drive like it. |

I never pack fins the same way twice, now they are in some container, bag, plastic storage box. I try to wedge in somewhere so the movement is restricted.
Damage obvious to vehicle, totaled, Damage to pvc rack, totaled.
Boards, masts, sails, and fins all intact, beer intact, 1 dozen eggs in cooler intact.
says something for the crashworthyness of the Chrysler

I'm on my second Subaru Outback. It's doing fine. 2006 manual, with three boards mounted roof side, and the rest of my gear, camping gear, and bicycle on the rear hitch rack. If I mount my sail bag, masts and booms topside as well, I can also sleep in the back if necessary. I still get 23 mpg highway. Not the quickest in acceleration, but carries highway speed well enough for me.
However, the newer Outbacks have gotten larger and my next will most likely be the Cross Trek, a new model out this month.

Read the reviews first. The mags haven't been impressed with the Crosstrek. No big problems, but just window dressing.
I chose an Outback instead, and am very impressed so far. |

their is a difference in cars that can carry a board or 2 or 3 on the roof, and travel what I suspect are relatively short distance.
boards strapped to the roof are a necessity for many, IMO very undesirable for lots of reasons.
so a car that fits everyday needs and yet can accommodate windsurfing gear, my Subaru Impressa wagon fits this mold
VS
a dedicated vehicle that will hold inside 6 boards, 18 sails and all the components to go with those.
which also get 25MPG across Wyoming at 80MPH _________________ K4 fins
