Soooo, from what I hear bank lending is tight and they can't get financing for a hotel right now. But, if they put in a cable park, they can get financing for the hotel and cable park, a package deal. Hood river wants more hotels on the water front? Really??? Thats what everyone is pushing for?

Tim,

Unless something has changed, I don't think that is the case. I believe that at this point, the hotel and commerical office / retail building planned for The Basins South shore are proceeding - disctinct from the cable-park proposal for The Basins waters.

It amazes me how 2nd wind sports and windance have been ardent cheerleaders for the cable park from the start, but when big winds opposes it the handful of supporters of the cable park on nwkite get all bent out of shape and threaten to take their businerss away from big winds. How moronic.
I imagine big winds will gain far more business than they will lose as a result of their courage to stand up and oppose the cable park.
Thanks to steve gates and big winds! Cool

It's not fair to condemn all on the words of a very few. I think you should have said 'a handful' rather than 'the handful'.

Personally, I don't agree with any boycott or Steve Gates slander. He is a valued member of this community and has a right to his opinion. If someone want's to take their business elsewhere because of this, that is their choice, but a misguided one in my opinion.

Let's please not make this more divisive than it already has become.

On the NWKite forum, some of the posters quickly and eloquently came to Steve Gates' defense and blasted the few kiters (*cough* Ian *cough*) that started in on Big Winds.

That guy Ian is incapable of recognizing anybody else's perspective on things, and simply makes vulgar personal attacks on anybody whom he disagrees with. He's a moron who does more to hurt his side than help.

Hot off the press: Port Commission President and Hood River Mayor have come up with a proposal to end the wrangling about Nichols Basin. The plan is that the Naitos drop the cable park and instead the west side of the basin (from the east side of the road to the shoreline) would be developed as a sort of linear park. The plan includes a pedestrian esplanade from the Hood River museum to the Event Site, more water access, a mix of recreation-based commercial activity (kayak/SUP lessons and rentals), and habitat restoration. The thought is that this beautiful public amenity will act as a catalyst for development at Lot 1. The basin would be improved at a much, much faster pace than it ever would if the cable park went in.

What an ingenious idea! The taxpayers get to pay for the landscaping of the hotel in exchange for them not renting the basin for pennies on the dollar. Of course since the basin is a navigable waterway they would never have been legally allowed to put in the cable park anyway. I've got to hand it to Naito. They're pretty clever at figuring out ways to try to sell the public on handing over precious public resources or using public funds to pay for the hotel's private business expenses. Why can't they just run an honest business like the rest of us? When they stop trying to shake down the public we'll stop complaining.

No one has proposed using public funds to landscape private property. The proposal is to use public funds on publicly owned property to create better access and amenities which would be available to the public. The Naitos haven't asked anyone to landscape their property for them, I would not propose it, and I can't imagine the UR Board considering it.

Give me a break! Are you really that naive, or are you simply a "Friends of the Waterfront" shill for Naito? Can you say "fake opposition?" As if the Hotel won't benefit greatly from the millions of dollars they want the taxpayers to spend. Why is it being presented to us as an ultimatum? Do we really need to be threatened by a private company to do something completely for our own benefit?
