|
|
Hot off the press: Port Commission President and Hood River Mayor have come up with a proposal to end the wrangling about Nichols Basin. The plan is that the Naitos drop the cable park and instead the west side of the basin (from the east side of the road to the shoreline) would be developed as a sort of linear park. The plan includes a pedestrian esplanade from the Hood River museum to the Event Site, more water access, a mix of recreation-based commercial activity (kayak/SUP lessons and rentals), and habitat restoration. The thought is that this beautiful public amenity will act as a catalyst for development at Lot 1. The basin would be improved at a much, much faster pace than it ever would if the cable park went in.

Great news. Not only does it restore the habitat of the basin, but also the soul and spirit of Hood River. |

Many miles of my "new home town's" Columbia riverfront is a linear park. It includes a marina, a golf course, some condos, a bandshell, boat launches, extensions of the lawns of a very nice hotels and office buildings, a trout and duck pond, playgrounds, miles of lawn, etc. The whole park from shoreline back 100-300 feet is well-groomed lawn and giant old shade trees; we can watch the beautiful park as we get our teeth cleaned, eat a seafood dinner or a gourmet buffet, close a mortgage, push federal government paperwork, etc. Very heavily used by a huge variety of local and national events, families, walkers and runners and bicyclists, toddlers and geezers, leashed dogs, an occasional windsurfer, and anything and anybody else imaginable ... except criminals or bangers in appreciable numbers.
On the water at different times and places there are cabin cruisers, unlimited hydroplane races, PWC, SUPs, kayaks, swimmers, an occasional WSer or two, wake boarders, inner tubes, dogs chasing balls, bass boats, a sighteeing jet boat, and a wide variety of waterfowl. This beautiful public resource is a TriCities highlight and a strong attraction for tourists, conventions, employers and employees, working stiff lunchtime walks -- even quick windsurfing sessions on the rare days (DAMN!) the wind lines up with the river and convenient evening sessions on those days. Every time some developer comes up with a new idea to make some money by building some damned thing or another, the public uproar is deafening; these people love their park and don't need no steenkin' high rise, Disneyland, mall, casino, etc on their community lawn; the geese are bad enough ... and we're not even allowed to saddle and ride the dang things.
Compare that to a cable park. |

isobars--what's the name of your town? The next step is crafting an actual plan for the basin. We need to see some good examples of what has worked in other places. Sounds like you've got something wonderful. |

Step in the right direction. Much admiring the efforts of Mayor Babitz and Commissioner Davies! _________________ CU Sailin' |

The TriCities includes Kennewick, Richland, and Pasco, WA. The three cities' parks are one of the public endeavors the three municipalities agree and cooperate on. Their collective website is http://tridec.org/ . |

Hey Karlos, yeh, getting rid of the cable park is a step in the right direction. I'll take that as a "soulful" outcome for Hood River, if it reaches a final, enforceable agreement. Much about the motel still remains to be seen. |
