One thing that jumps out at me about that map, is Cape Verde's on it... Columbus surfed ! Well. he might of just went there to catch the Alizes to the " new world" , but cool to see it on there as "modern "maps up to even 5 or 10 years ago, many didn't have Cape Verde on em.

Now the big question is to see if these New England waterman can find their way across the sea to Cape Verde.

>>at which point I conceited defeat and went to look for options<< This one made me think. Conceded might be the word you were thinking. I can see this post from many angles. One, it definitely puts emphasis on the salesman's pitch >>Fins are important.<< Two, KP went through a similar experience a few years ago (losing his fin bag in transit to a PWA event) and wrote up the experience on his blog. He did, however, use the fins that another competitor offered him and did fairly well. I would think being well rested and fit for competition might be more important than having the ideal equipment combination.

I asked Josh that question because I know how much tuning goes into achieving that sixth gear that the pro racers obtain. Josh tries out so many fins, and each year he does it again whenever the sails change. Yes, he could stick in a stock Angulo fin that comes with the board and still sail circles around most people (the stock Angulo race fins are very, very good) but not have a chance at Albeau or Dunkerbeck.

My question was aimed at understanding the difference he feels when using different fins that are elite, and whether that difference might have been overwhelmed by the drop in performance due to exhaustion.

Driving all night to race the next morning isn't new, but flying across the ocean three times shortly before racing at that level takes a toll. I'm impressed that he made it to the starting line at all let alone actually one a heat. That is very, very impressive.

Josh Angulo is a machine!!! After seeing some of his off the lips in Cabo Verde flying over the "pit". Flying over the ocean a few times in a jet is nothing!

Dan, if you see a crazy man coming at you with a knife, do you stop him and ask whether or not he would be better off dropping it and using a polite method of obtaining your money?
