|
|
The season in La Ventana is quickly approaching! Really excited about
all that will be going on this winter. Along with all the long list
of amazing activities that Pro Windsurf La Ventana has going on, we
will be holding slalom races every other weekend. The La Ventana
Race Series that was so much fun last season is going to be bigger and
better than ever, with 4 buoy down wind slalom action twice a month
and hopefully some additional practice sessions.
At PWLV we are going to have a good crew of slalom sailors, including
Casey Hauser, Bryan Metcalf-Perez, Jay Watermayer, Wyatt Miller, and
myself to push the limits on the slalom course. It will be a 4 buoy
slalom course with timed starts and everything.
If you want to get going on your racing, there is no better place to
start than Pro-Windsurf La Ventana. This year we will have some
slalom gear for guests to use so if you are in need of some kit and
want to do some training with Wyatt and I before the races, we will
have you covered!
Along with the racing, we have tons of freeride and wave gear to use
on those blasting Norte days. When it is really windy, we all go
jumping and wave riding, not so much wind or waves, we blast around
on the slalom gear with a solid crew of guys. No wind at all? AVT's,
snorkel gear, SUP's, fishing tours, hot tubs, .... the list goes on
and on!
So stoked for this season!
Remember to book your dates soon! Spots are filling up!
See you all on the water!

Tyson---what's the wind range for these races? Typical sail size?
I have a dim memory that LV wind is generally in the 15-22 mph range, with some (few) epic days in the mid 20s.
What was the prevalent wind for the races? What was the prevalent sail size (race sails)?
For people who might fly down, what is the best airline to use to get your kit down and back? (Dim memory, again, but I'm guesssing it's Mexicana as Alaska Airlines is somewhat punitive on windsurf kits.)

Chris,
The races are usually 7.0 to 7.8 race sails. Really steady wind so we are able to get in a bunch of races. Best airlines is Alaska. They have reasonable prices on gear. Hope to see you down there and let me know if you have any other questions.

Many people raced very successfully last year with sails smaller than the 7.0 and 7.8 sails used by Tyson and some of the top racers. 5.8 to 6.5 were were common for sailors not having dedicated race gear. There was some pretty exciting competition among recreational oriented racers who were having a great time but not really pushing Tyson.

For flying down with your stuff, I think Virgin America is free or almost free and now they have direct flights from SFO to Cabo. GO Branson.

Virgin charges $50/ bag under their "Sporting Good" luggage policy. Make sure you point that policy at the counter as not many agents are aware of such.
Traveled about 6 times with sails or boards with Virgin. Only had one occasion with a minimal rail dent (easy fix). No problem other wise.
The gals/ guys at Virgin SFO are a bit more educated regarding cost for windsurfing gear.
Definitely GO BRANSON!

FYI.....
United DOES NOT allow large sporting goods like "surfboards" on their flights from SFO to Cabo (SJD). I think the cargo holds on the Airbus are small.
Alaska does into LaPaz for about $75 (3 years ago).
Check baggage rules before you book.

from united website:
Baggage in excess of 100 pounds (45 kilograms) or 115 linear inches (292 cm)(total length + width + height) will not be accepted as checked baggage. United will not accept more than 4 bags per customer that are overweight (more than 50 pounds), oversize (more than 62 linear inches or 158 cm) or a combination of overweight and oversize.
i flew ua to san jose del cabo this year with a "golf" bag. $40. couldn't fit a course board in that bag, though.
shipping as cargo isn't a good idea. mexican custosm clearance can be very frustrating..

Chris--
Shipping gear with us from Oakland to Maui on Alaska was quite reasonable this summer. 2 boards, 5 sails, 4 masts and 2 booms was $75 going and $100 returning plus we brought home an extra board for $75. Don't know why the difference going and returning but at that price, I was not going to push the point. Far more reasonable than renting for two people for two weeks. AK to Cabo should be an option at those prices but...it is "international" and could be different. Check website.

If you are not into flying with race gear we will have some dedicated slalom gear available for our guests at Pro-Windsurf La Ventana this season.
We will be adding Naish slalom boards and Naish 3 and 4 cam race sails to our fleet. So if you want to fly down care free and still be ripping in the races come check us out this winter.
And check our November Vacation Special
