Meanwhile, in my town, the library computers are being used to watch porn. Not by teenage boys, but by the old homeless guys and other assorted pervs. The authorities have said they can't do anything about this, because it is a freedom of speech thing.

Techno....

Glad you find this amusing. One of my good friends is steadily going blind (started just after his 40 th birthday).

Yes, he reads...he has a special computer monitor that allows him to use his peripheral vision (central vision is gone). He also continues to work as a consulting wildlife biologist. He has to work double time to continue to keep his business going, since he will not take disability insurance (he wants to continue to be productive).

It is a laugh, isn't it?

So because some people are blind, we must deny some library services to the rest of the population? If bringing everybody down to the level of the least common denominator isn't Marxism at its finest, what is? Under that logic, why don't we just ban books because some people can't learn at all, outlaw the automobile because some people are incapable of driving, ban all speech because some people can't speak, or even poke out the eyes of all sighted people? (That's the same logic Obama bases his wealth redistribution ideas on.)

Doesn't the left have ANY idea how stupid political correctness extremism sounds to rational people? The word, "handicapped" was coined for a reason, and no euphemism is going to render it obsolete. There are some useful things some people can't do, period. Get over it, and instead of bringing everyone else down to their level, how about we help everyone improve?

I suspect that now anyone who'd blind will want that sensory feeling while watching porn. The librarians may have to strip down to provide that brail experience for equality. I'm all for this.

However, seriously, they should be allowed to distribute the e-readers, while attempting to find a solution via text to talk software for the blind. Maybe a brail screen saver with bumps, kind of like what they use to protect cell phone screens. (hey I should patent that idea!)

Bard, I have to say ...you're my favorite right wing wacko here, the only one with a sense of humor. Hey, did you see Kelly Slater this past weekend?

Stevenbard...the problem with this approach is that it, simply, does not happen that way. Once a program is started that does not consider the handicapped, it is difficult to include it later on and it becomes an uphill battle. Relying on future funding sources to include a population rarely works.

If we want the handicapped to be as productive as possible, providing the tools to do this should be a priority.

Denyng e-book loans to sighted people helps the blind ... how?
At least if we take money from the productive, we can give it to the unproductive. How does denying Nooks from the sighted help the blind?

No, I spent 4 days slogging into OH surf at my favorite windsurfing break. However, I have the key to Little Dume where the photos were taken of him this weekend. I don't surf much, but when I do, that's the spot. Many celebs and the water temp is +5 degrees from Leo Carrillo. I assume you saw the babes in bikinis struting in the photos? This town is very nice in August and September! You wouldn't believe what happens at that beach.
