Usually when cycling my intention is to go deep and really get my heart rate up. What surprised me a little was that on really difficult trail runs trying to stay with my daughter who runs track and cross country in high school my heart rate would peak at 154. For windsurfing I only used my chest strap 3 times, all three on awesome days at 3rd where I used wave sails (easy to handle) with minimal number of falls. In fact on one of those days I jumped off for a swim in the channel to cool off. I haven't used a monitor on light to moderate days and I'm sure my heart rate would go up slogging with larger sails and longer booms, especially waterstarting with such gear. I've surfed at Ocean Beach many times, I seriously doubt I would break my monitor but that can be a scary place and I prefer Santa Cruz. Today was a longboard day on a 10' Haut, easy waves and easy paddling. Point being though, the OP asked about using a heart monitor in the surf and I can say my 310 worked ok.

Next I guess I will have to give it a whirl while telemark skiing, especially setting a skin track at altitude. But the last couple of days there has been a nice little swell so I might try it again surfing with a possible increase in paddling just to see how high my heart rate goes when paddling hard.
