My cambered sails are putting lots of wear on the masts. I've started to put some sail tape around the mast and now tried putting some of the 3M car film as it leaves much less residue when peeled off. The tape eventually has to be replaced.

Any other suggestions on how to protect the mast from cam wear? The cams are new and they don't have any rough spots. It's just the friction but I'm hoping there's some better way?

I don't own any cambers, but I'm hooked on McLube on any friction and wear spots on my WSing gear. From the entire mast (except for the boom area) to the friction spots in my booms, bases, mastfoot sliders, etc., McLube makes everything rig, derig, and work better, and an application lasts for at least a whole season.

I would recommend staying away from tape, it will wear off and create a sticky mess. The best thing you can do is repair the mast with epoxy and fiberglass tape. I've done this around the boom wear on my masts. Depending on the type of mast you have (RDM vs STD) get some 6 or 8 oz fiberglass tape in the correct width to wrap around the mast (I've used 4" on my RDMs). You can overlap the tape on itself as necessary.

Scuff/sand the mast where it's worn, then clean with aceton. Measure out your fiberglass repair patches and cut to the desired length. Mix up a batch of quality epoxy, paint it on the mast, and then laminate the glass patches. Once you've got the patches in place, overwrap them with electrical tape. This will compress the glass to the mast and squeeze out excess resin. After the epoxy cures, remove the tape and wipe the mast with acetone to remove residual tape adhesive. The added fiberglass will act as a "sacrificial" wear layer so you won't be damaging the load bearing fibers of your mast. When the fiberglass eventually wears out, repeat the procedure.

Doesn't boom wear indicate your booms are slipping? Wouldn't a grippy shim and/or tighter clamping prevent that?

Stopped by WestMarine on the way home and picked up a can of McLube. I'll spray it inside the cambers first and see if it helps.
