Does anyone have info on windsurfing at these lakes? I'm thinking of a trip next week. Does it blow in Aug? How cold is the water? How bad are the jet skis? |

My brother in law has a cabin on Huntington Lake and I have been there a few times. Definitely colder of the two lakes but there are very few jet skis and power boats unlike Shaver. Huntington lake is the windier of the two and the wind for the most part comes straight down the lake. Afternoon wind can typically be between 10 and 20 MPH but hardly ever more. I have sailed a Laser there and it would be fine on a long board. Generally too light and gusty for short boarding unless you have very large equipment. |

Mark has Hunington spot on. It is the sailing lake. Shaver is the motorboat lake. Hunington is oriented east-west and the wind flows from the west up the valley in the afternoon. It is a beautiful high sierra lake. I have sailed many races over the years and is popular for class regattas. It seldom gets above 15 knots so a larger board and sail is needed. The water is cool, high sierra mountain lake, but a shorty could work fine if the air temp is up. Otherwise a thin full suit. You can launch just west of the boat launch or further west toward the dam (all on the north side). Have fun there. I have always like sailing Hunington. |

if you're bored:
above huntington there are more lakes. can't say if they are good sailing but great fishing. mono hot springs is a very nice destination on the banks of the headwaters of the san joaquin river with natural hot springs, some right on the river's edge. |
