Those are the right ideas. Another is to plan on using the current to your advantage if the wind quits. If darkness or a squall is approaching, figure out where you must be so it helps you. If I'm parked at the Hatch and the wind gets squirrely or the sun is setting, I'm gonna be down towards Wells, not up towards Cheap or Swell or directly off my launch.

Swimming our gear, rigged and ready for that saving gust, clear across the river should be boring ... not tiring, frightening, or even an "event". Even an oncoming barge should serve only to focus our attention and maybe trigger a brief extra effort, not a change of shorts.
