Sunny, with a high near 77. North wind 14 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph.

The swell is due to the tide and wind opposing each other. SW wind and outgoing or westerly flow will produce the largest swell.

From experience Westerly at WD produces peaked up jumping ramps, not riding ones. My incoming tide for smoothest swell still stands (at the rock pile). It may be that the opposed tide and wind chop it up too much, or we may be sailing in the eddy reverse flow current there, for the Nantucket Sound tidal basin. Not sure which, but I do know what works there. SSW in incoming tide best for getting swell rides.
Buzzards Bay sites (both sides) work the same way--incoming tide with SW wind means smoothest swells (Chappy swells in close, Ned's swells out way far). I'm fairly certain we sail in the eddy reverse tidal current near shore there (Chappy or Neds) because of ease of staying upwind experience--easier in incoming tide (Ned's markedly so, out by Strawberry Point and Angelica Point)...so we must be in the eddy. At Ned's the best swell is way out by Nye Ledge, 3 miles out and a bit upwind of the launch (Green Bell Buoy #1). Good swells here only from mid tide coming up until 1 hour post high tide. Now I'm doubting I'm still in eddy reverse tidal flow out here toward the middle of the Bay, so I"m guessing that tidal flow and wind in same direction gives the smoothness to the swell. Maybe not the largest peaks, but better period and smoothness. |

| i do know that outgoing half tide on SW to WSW produces such nasty square chop between the beach and rockpile that i'll usually wait it out for a bit to get lower and flatten out. part of the reason that boards with more V(FSW) feel better there i think. |

I'll back up mcmsc01 on this 100%.
Shredbob, you may be right about 'larger waves' with incoming, but the wind between them is null and holey. Its trash for jumping because you land in a hole, then get thrashed with the next wave..if they are sizeable.
The Gorge works with opp wind to current and produces the smoothest riding & jumping conditions that you can get in and out of & staying powered up. Not to mention how easy it is to stay upwind due to current.
Buzz Bay works the same way in SW with outgoing tide. I know of some areas only accessable by boat that have incredible potential with huge outflow tides.
West Dennis Rockpile works like that to some degree with Bass River outgoing. South is better than SW. West is worst as the current is perpindicular to wind, which causes the psycho cross chop.
I've spent 100's of hours at West Dennis rockpile, I use to have a tether out there to tie up & 'rest' on the rocks!
My fav wind direction for WD is South Easterly with working the waves east side of the pile to Lighthouse Restaraunt 
Swan River just up wind aint bad either! |

I'm good at nursing a plane in the holes. that's how my adjustable outhaul earns it's keep. interesting point on the Bass River outflow.
I will add my .02 that "good" swell takes a lot of things lining up to occur, based on Gorge sailing over the past 18 seasons. A key component seems to be opposing current strength vs. wind strength and water depth...in some relationship that always surprises. Wind consistency is also important. So we keep coming back for more, ready for another great day on the water in a different way  |
