Might be old news to y'all, but I jut caught wind of this....

Positively Kai: Windsurfing Across Lake Michigan

Impressive crossing, and cool video coverage. Anybody know what gear he used? I see it's a 110-liter slalom board, but couldn't pick out a sail size marking. Maybe 6.5-ish by the looks of it?? I'm a terrible judge of sail size.

We somewhat regularly cross Lake Champlain at its widest point ('bout 8 miles each way) on shortboards when the right conditions roll around, but my body hurts just thinking about 56 miles on a single tack in big lake chop. Yowzer. Nice work Kai!

We travel to West Michigan every summer to visit friends and family. When conditions are right, Lake Michigan beaches are tough to beat: sugar sand and relatively warm fresh water. We prefer late June/early July before the heat and humidity set it, though the water is a little cooler then. Windsurfing is hit or miss, but there are lots of other things to do as well.

Fall is best. Water is warm and the winds pick up. Sugar sand, lots of space, fresh water, no sharks.

last time I was there, it looked pretty sail-able and moderately wave-y.
