When I looked at Google earth my thoughts were similar to outcast
No swell will get there But I would still try
I would sail in a pond right now if it were windy enough
I went there several times back when we would go to neds
I was always alone so naver went out
Can not remeber if there is a wave or not.
Can the boats go to squibby or maybe SE BI?
Might be a noce wave at either this sunday?
nothing like a 30 mile RT maiden voyage to break her in |

I'm assuming the anemometer is close to the webcam (http://www.westislandweather.com/) -- high in the air over land - gaining a thermal updraft push and also dramatically reducing hi-low. I can't believe it's actually that much windier on the water, than Ned's. I live down the road from Horseneck where the SW wind is lighter than West Island, but the swell is always bigger. Though on a really big day, it might be cleaner at West Island, but I've got Gumby's break for that(East side of Gooseberry), again assuming there's wind.
I also haven't been willing to risk the time to drive to West Is. Surprisingly, it's a shorter drive for me to Neds than to West Island due to stoplights and city traffic getting through Fairhaven. |

I just sailed there for the first time on last Tuesday the 17th. (July 2012) The meter is on top of a tall metal pole, at least 10m (30') up in the air.
The parking lot is big and there were less than 10 cars there. No parking fee.
I sailed far from the shore, so rocks were not a problem. It was blowing SW, and the area with the blue lines on the pic was in the windshadow, so I didn't go there. No down the line swell as far as I could tell.
I got there late, after 6pm. Managed a few planing runs on a 6.0 Retro and a 105L hypersonic. The meter at Neds is up high as well, so both readings seem correct, relative to each other. If you look at google maps, West Island is much more exposed, so it makes sense that it'd be windier there than at Newd's. (on a SW)
Hope that helps...

I use the West Island meter as an indication of what it might be like out in the middle of Buzz. Bay. I launch in Sippican Harbor (Marion) which is further out than Ned's and even with Angelica Point. Altho the WI meter may read higher than actual, if it is reading 19 or 20, with Ned's reading 12 or 13, I know if I slog out, I can be powered up, 5.9 or sometimes even 5.3, once I clear Converse Point.
I have sailed at West Island, but launched from the inside cove at a boat ramp. Don't go there; it's like a mine field with rocks. There is Buzz Bay swell, but no waves, as far as my experience goes. |
