This is probably a dumb question, but do I risk damaging my equipment doing the self-catapult?

During the self-catapult the only thing you can really bust is the nose of the board. Like any catapult if you hold on and keep sheeting in you will avoid slamming the nose. It is when you let go with the back hand during a catapult that you go forward towards the nose instead of around to the down-wind side of the board.

However learning the self-catapult will allow you to avoid nose dings in the future. Whenever I am about to get catapulted these days I just say "screw it" keep sheeting in and do a self-catapult instead of resisting, letting go with the back hand and cracking the nose.
