coincidence? Not an orginal idea of mine, but one proposed to me this AM at 0700...

Goes like this. Scores of windmills stand in the way of our wind, giant beasts, harnessing energy to fuel my neighbors Chevy Volt (just kidding, not sure anyone has that neighbor Very Happy ), but point being, that energy is being harnessed. It has to take away from what reaches sailing sites, no?

The access seems to have had better wind all season. In years past, the powerlines seemed to fill in better - this could all be due to weather patterns, global warming/cooling, bad labor statistics, who knows, but... any of you have any real explaination to these seemingly related events?

Mike

I seriously doubt those windmills have any effect on the wind that reaches the water.

You know, the wind does clock during the day. Of course, the predominant wind direction can vary day to day, but it still clocks during the day. On a day that is strong SW in the morning will tend to get more westerly later in the day. At Sherman Island, that means that the afternoon and later can actually be coming more over the elevated hills in the Powerlines area, whereas The Access has less interference by the hills. Also with the floods in the afternoon, that's why The Access usually fairs better.

Well the Kennedy's were able to get windmills blocked from Cape Cod because they said it would effect their sailing.

Of course Windmills take away the wind, and not only that but build enough of them and they will effect climate (besides being a rather horrifying eyesore)

They don't take away the wind. They don't change the climate. Get on with things. Geeez.

Chandler is right, the access has almost always had steadier winds due to less interference from surounding hills. The sign was explored and developed due to better swell when it is ebbing and not because of better wind than the access.

By design and definition, windmills subtract energy from the wind, lowering its speed immediately downwind. What clusters of them do to our wind could include introducing turbulence, damping the gusts, diverting some wind around the cluster, and making us wish the power companies would bank their energy in giant batteries, point 'em at our launches on dead days, and power 'em up.

Really? They create energy by magic?

I am all pro-environment, but windmills are a really bad idea. The destroy the environment, disrupt local and migratory ecology, and alter local, and possibly global, climate.

Check this for example: http://digitaljournal.com/article/268725
