Water at the Dalles dam is 63, temps today should reach 90-95 in Hood River. Are there any non-canucks who've gone out in a shorty yet? (this comment is not meant as a slight to our neighbors to the north, I love Canadians but their skin seems to be thicker than mine so hard to judge based on their standards of "warmth"). |

I sailed Rowena in a shorty last weekend and it was comfortable. However, I would not have wanted to be separated from my gear and swimming for more than a few minutes. I think you would get cold quickly.
Summer's here! |

Andy claims to have been in a 2/1 mm shorty for a month, which obviously includes many days in the 60s w/water in the upper 50s. You guys ... and I ... are either wusses or have an IQ.

"what, a shorty now? Been in the 2/1 shorty for a month....ah but using the 3mm vest under thanks for the tip years ago that thing is a heater." |

I still shiver me timbers at the thought of bare arms and legs at those water temps, vest or no vest. |

Today in the Hook teaching, boardshorts. Sailing after work, 3 mm long legs/short arms.
While I think it's real nice that some people are sailing in boardshorts and shorties, WHAT IF you break something? Friday at Viento a sailor broke a boom and couldn't figure out how to sail it back with one boom arm. He finally separated his rig from his board and started paddling for his life (this was after being about 1 mile upwind from the launch in the middle of the river!). He never made it back to shore. Eventually he got lucky and got rescued by a fishing boat which brought him back.
He was in a full wetsuit and was COLD. Imagine how he would have been dressed in boardshorts.
Guys dress for the swim not the ride. If you get hot, fall in..... |

Shorty today felt fine Hood River to Hatchery. Fell in a lot and had had to swim a bit. Actively swimming I would say a shorty is fine. Just floating it might not be enough. |

66 degrees water temp, but often <60 air temp in the morning. I was just right with a 1 mm shorty under a cheapo 3/2 Nylon II (fuzzy) full suit recently with air temps in the 80s. I'd guess a high quality 3/2 shorty would have felt fine, but I wanted more protection from heavy shoreline brush and the prospect of a 1.5-mile swim.
Normally I may be in board shorts and a simple vest by now, but not this year. |
