I owe debt of gratitude to Jim for his work. It changed my life.
I did not know it until tonight but he lived only 30 or so miles from my home in North Carolina, apparently Pfafftown, NC. I wish I could have met him

Drake's paper, "Wind Surfing - a new concept in sailing", is a good read, with clear descriptions and drawings. It's available as a free PDF from Rand:

Amusing: "[t]he 56 sq ft [5.2 m^2] sail is about all that a strong man can handle in 12 to 15 knot winds." Perhaps this explains my troubles yesterday with a 5.0 in what turned out to be 26 knot gusts.

Board cited as typically weighing 50 pounds, sail 20 pounds.

"It may be obvious at this point that wind-surfing requires the development of certain unique skills."

Having grown up in part in Santa Monica, I love that this came from an actual engineer, and at RAND of all places. I knew that I liked this sport, and now I know more about why I do.
