Attached video gets good at 2 minutes. Shows JP having a kite encounter, similar to what I've experienced on Maui and Cali. The difference is I'm not quite as good as JP, and the kiters seem to just pass, oblivious of screwing up the wave, or the potential danger of their lines crossing below you.
Kiter looks like a deer in the headlights as JP slashes above him.

And I agree with the above poster. Windsurfing should be the young mans sport. |

Looks are deceiving. This happens all the time. Kiter snaps a jibe inside 200 yards upwind thinking it's ok, but the sailor caught the bump outside. Sailor beats up the wave while kiter drifts downwind. Now they are crossing paths as the wave starts to break. In my experience the kites just keep snap jibing in and out until they get the best wave. Over in Hawaii, some waves like Kanaha can be a half a mile wide. So conflict is easier, and less obvious. Here in California the waves break on points or reefs and are not as wide as Hawaii. (better shape though..Mahalo;)
I think in the video, the kiter would have been pissed off if JP had snaked him. Secondly, I've sailed on the same wave as JP in a PWA contest. He was very respectful in the way he asked me to get off my/his wave. IOW, I don't think he'd snake someone.
BTW, as is typical in larger surf, the kiter didn't look like he was slashing that wave. It looked more like he was trying to outrun it. Watch the best kiters at jaws or Fiji, and then compare them with JP on the same wave. No comparison.....None. (see kiter at Teahupoo in Jeep comercial, then watch JP on the same day. JP caught the wave in front start video at 4:30 see same kite at 5:20)
