Problem here is, what do you want to do?
SUP windsurf is great for a little of both, but needs more wind to plane and perform.
Pure light wind slalom is the earliest planing and jibing, and also is a fine SUP for less than 8mph winds.
Formula is every bit as good in light winds, but jibes like a horse compared to light wind slalom, and is a fine SUP in less than 9mph winds.
Most normal sized riders agree and 11.5 is earlier planing than 12.5's, but non pumping big boyz will disagree.
I assume most of us want to windsurf as often as possible, leaving SUP only for the deadest days.

I had to read it a few times, but SUPing a formula board? really?

Be serious.
A formula is THIRTY NINE inches wide, about 9" wider than most SUP's.
My bud who weighs 250 easily SUP's his Formula L-8, one of the smaller boards.
Another bud, who weighs 135, SUP's a borrowed BicAstroDock. That's 24.5" wide.
What, you need to SUP across LakeSuperior? NO, you only need to fool around a mile and back.

I'm sorry but I'll have to disagree.

I SUP my Starboard Rio M. It is so big and stable I've had both my kids walking around on it while I paddle.

BeagleB, if you weigh more than 250 lbs., using a formula for SUP can become difficult. They're only 160 liters.
But for anyone under than, and BigBen is 6'3", 250 lbs. last winter, it's a easy SUP board, thos not as fast as the 12'ers going around.
What do you care, you're not racing SUP's, are you.
BTW, I know the lady who WON the Maui to Molokai SUP race multiple times. Her board of choice? Whatever happens to be sponsoring her, but over 12' long.
Are you SUP'ing from Maui to Molokai?

When a board gets wider than 34" it becomes difficult to paddle because you are reaching so far out to the sides to be clear of the board.
There are Sups up to 36" but they are for really big dudes, like 300 lbs, and they are around 11 or 12 feet long. A board like this would be very slow and not much fun to paddle.
There are short wide boards for surfing, 7' X 30"-34" but they have a surboard rockerline, I could never paddle a board like that but people who have say they are impossible to keep in a straight line. Only useful in steep waves.
If you are paddling for recreation or racing you want a board that paddles straight and has glide, that would be long and narrow probably with a displacement nose.
The shape of a Formula board is all wrong for Suping, standing in a kayak and paddling would be more fun.
The woman you mention would be paddling whatever open ocean RACE board 12'6", 14' or unlimited her sponsor gives her, not just any old sup.

You should be posting on the SUP forum, not the windsurfing forum, if that's your thing.
So what if a Formula or big slalom board doesn't keep up with 12' SUP's!
WHO cares. You only do it when the wind is under 10, and you're GOOFING AROUND.
I used to SUP a NaishIcon120, 237 long, 69cm wide. It stayed just fine with most guys on their 11'6" SUP's, for paddles up to 1/2 mile. I get bored after one block, and start doing sink nose or tail pivot jibes, diving porpoises, or full on 180 center pivot switches.
Oh, the width. A Formula is 39.4" wide, so use a paddle 6" longer, cures all your ills in the world.

Zirtaeb, I'm just responding to your claim that a formula board would be a good sup and that is all, have a nice day.

any short board is a pig when not planing. JP SL is no exception.

both are very good on and off a plane. the rs-d2 planes as early as anything on the market.

rs 380 slices thru the worst chop that open ocean, open class racing has to offer.

Jinge,

That rs d2 looks neat. Who is selling them? Did a search and came up with nothing. But... looks expensive.
