question regarding FFF: do you turn your hips more towards the nose of the board or towards the side when you go for the back strap?

Like so many other WSing dilemmas ... 1. It depends and 2. Experiment.

1. It depends on your physiology, your point of sail, your posture at the moment, your preference, your strap locations, where your sail is pulling you, whether you're planing, etc.

2. You can figure out what works for you in less time than it took you to type the question. Basically, you do whichever feels natural at the moment. Standing here in my office, doing it with my bellybutton pointing "forward" while fishing for a backstrap, distorts my knees and ankles, whereas bellybutton facing downwind feels natural.

Once again, there are very few hard and fast rules in this sport (except in organized racing).

If you turn your hips slightly forward (and make sure your head is looking forward and slightly away from the mast) you'll have a smoother transition. If conditions are hectic don't worry about it...the idea is to keep the board from rocking fore and aft.

And side to side, which would steer you side to side.
