sail-n-ski,

I would be surprised if you don’t have shopping carts in your waterways.

My guess is Lunardi’s supermarket is the source. It’s just three miles up the creek that empties into Haskins.

Bored kids would be my guess for the perps.

If you google Canal ST and Orange Ave in South San Francisco you can do the walking tour of the area. You’ll see that the canal barriers on the bridges are very short. It would be very easy to toss a cart into the drink. Once there the winter rains swell the canal with water and debris that gets captured by the carts causing them to be washed downstream then coming to rest at Haskins where the flow spreads out.

That’s my theory anyway. I’m thinking about applying for a Federal Grant to study the migration of the shopping cart.

Costco supermarket is less than 1 mile up the Colma creek from Haskins and the Bay Trail bridge over the creek situated right behind the store provides an excellent tossing platform.

We fished out only one Costco cart out of dozen. How do I know? It is the only cart that was intact and rolling. It must be the paint or something.
