The numbers are a bit optimistic. Corpus Christi Windsurfing Assc. has only 136 members on their list, not the 161 shown. In the real world less than half of the 136 sail more than 2 times a year. The names are more likely a count of any person who has been a paying member in the past 5 years or something similar. One of the "listed" members is Wardog, who owns Surfing Sports in California and a couple years back, he dropped windsurfing altogether and his shop is now a SUP shop. I went thru the membership list on the CCWA website and over half the names either aren't sailing anymore or are people who are lurkers from other parts of the world. For what it's worth, the CCWA has all but ceased to function. The only scheduled function for the year is a swap meet on April 28 followed that same evening with a social at one of the local eateries. These were added to the schedule within the past 2 weeks.
Even though membership is down, Corpus is still one of the windiest places in the US. Water temps have been in the mid-70s for about a month and there's plenty of room at any of the launch sites. The key to our continued windsurfing presence is the remarkably good windsurfing shop "Worldwinds" located at the Padre Island National Seashore. _________________ It's a way of life! |

what is crazy is that we had around 20-30 people out in austin last weekend. Will probably be the same next weekend. One issue may be that in corpus there are so many places to sail with no restrictions so the club doesnt really provide that much value. In austin, they do a learn to windsurf clinic which gives free lessons each spring which has new people constantly joining. Last weekend it seemed like about half the people couldnt waterstart so definitely a lot of new people joining |

A common happening here in Corpus Christi is for avid windsurfers to save for years to build their dream home on the waters edge. Once it's built, they loose interest in windsurfing and take up Harley riding! I can't explain it, I can only say it happens. _________________ It's a way of life! |

like all those people that move to maui to take up outrigger canoeing or something else like cycling? what is it about high wind places like that? why do so many go to them, burn out on windsurfing and take up something else like (read, smoking dope and watching TV) couch potato-ing? far cheaper rent to do so in IOWA.....
doesn't happen to all, just lots. too much of a good thing? intermittent rewards are far more gratifying than constant rewards? some take their skills to a certain point and become bored? _________________ www.aerotechsails.com
