Lee, have you gone to Steyn's/siswati's website? That's some serious racing, too. The photography business must be doing pretty well. '-)
I raced for fun, with consistent top few percent finishes. Innate skill aside, my vision, a mere 20/20 with glasses but with poor depth perception, wasn't going to win me any Utah desert races overall. The guys who won individual races could read the fine print on rocks I couldn't even see; I went for consistency and beat out the whole amateur class one year, but much preferred unfettered playtime to competition; you get to ride harder and pick your own terrain. |

I'd always wanted to try motocross, after checking out the '68 InterAm at ChinaCamp in SanRafael. I was a road racer, both 250 Production and GP (YDS-3C and TD-1) and needed to switch to something more athletic and less precise. Went from Scorpion to CZ250 red tanker that I broke a tib/fib major compound, then started again in '79 when tennis started to get boring.
My neighbor was 1955 GrandNational#5 AMA DirtTrack, and supported my roadracing with advice and recommendations. He got me some great deals on bikes, rides, parts, and support. Too bad I never got anywhere, choosing to go fast and crash rather than ride smart and place.
Went from a broken elbow in '83 (CMC Pro 250 at LakeMadera) right into windsurfing by the end of summer, 3 days, and sold all my guns and motorcycle gear. |
The only old bikes I messed with are 1970's Montys. Towed this 348 all over the country for a plate.

Wow, that's a Montesa Trials bike! I knew Ossa made them, as did Bultaco, but never saw a trials Montesa.
I raced a Capra modified with street tires and higher gearing around SanFrancisco's City Hall road races back in the '70's. Came in top third, handling prevailing over pure power. It was a 360.
I never did well in motocross. Took me 5 years to finally make 125 expert, something I should have made my first season.
Blame Sat nite taxi driving...shift starting at 7, ending around 4, then driving my van loaded with 3-5 bikes at least 60 miles to Sunday AMA races. That seems bad. What's worse.....I also had to drive the Sunday night shift, meaning I'd start work around 9pm after not sleeping for over 30 hours. |

If only one is easy, definitely go with May ... and don't let the April meet discourage you.
Be alert to the ratio of buyers to sellers and to competitors' prices, and adjust yours accordingly. Be ready to jump at lower offers, and don't be surprised when a second, small wave of bargain hunters returns toward noon looking for discouraged sellers. With no emotional attachments to your gear, you should come out pretty well.

I'll agree eyesight a huge factor in CC racing.
My tennis bud was a AMA District37 #ONE in 1989, Desert Hare and CC. He had eagle eyes, was no athlete, but really controlled and measured. I got to practice with him before we met playing tennis, me on a 125 and him on his 490 Yamaha at SearsPoint. We were close, him threatening to pass me, me taking high outside corner lines maintaining more speed. We met 7 years later, on a tennis court.
I"m blind as a bat, needing glasses since age 6, and never wearing them. |

Hey Craig,
I found out this morning have a funeral to go to in Salem on the 31st(Sat). Are you going to be around Hood River? I'd like to buy you breakfast and ask a few questions on gear.
Just a thought... |

Hi Forrest,
I won't be in Hood River until about May 24th (I'm actually going to be
helping out with the birth of my Grandson around the 31st of this month
in Denver), but, feel free to PM me with questions (or ask them here for a bigger sample of responses).

Hey everybody, thanks for the great comments about our Swap meets and our Used Gear department. The Used Gear stuff online has been getting busier every year. Despite what others say Windsurfing is alive and well in our eyes.
Note that I just bought this whole pile of gear from Forrest at a fair price. We will be listing it all online at fire sale prices. It should be up on our site by sometime Monday next week. Feel free to call me if there is something in you want.
Warms winds to you all,
Dave Nunn
