So I'm stoked to be hitting Hatteras this spring for the first time since marriage (6 years).

One of my bucket list items is making a run out to the reef in the sound. Looking for any recommendations on best ways to do it (and of course, to NOT do it).

Also, thought I'd see what other folks have as their windsurf bucket lists? Hookipa, Gorge, triple backward loop?

Just curious to see what other folks have been thinking of doing on their windsurf list before they check out.

Item #1 on mine was retiring ASAP. I did, and it has paid off as much or more than hoped. I never cease to be amazed at how many people live so high off the hog early in their lives with no regard to its impact on their "old age" ... you know, like their mid 40s. √

#2 would be finding a place I could own a home ON a beach from which I would actually prefer to do almost all my sailing, at least for a whole long season. I would LOVE to have piles of boards and sails rigged 24/7 for instant plug and play on the best water within commuting distance. I've looked for that general area, venue, and/or specific lot for decades and haven't found it yet, at any price I could or could not afford. The closest I've come so far is a motor home. Weak √.

#3 was moving near some world-class, or at least continent-class, WSing mecca. √

#4 is a wide selection of the finest plug and play gear I can find at any price. Thanks to a LOT of research and living near a source of a huge variety of dirt cheap top notch gear, I'm about as close as I can conveniently get. √

#5 would be better long-term access to wave sailing. I haven't figured that one out yet, all things considered. No √, and no good √ in sight.

#6 is probably staying in shape to enjoy hard sailing into my senior years, but doing it in a manner that doesn't interfere with the sailing through injury or overtraining. There's always room for improvement, but ... √ .

#7 is walking a tightrope between pushing the sailing envelope and incurring a season-ending injury. That gets tougher every year. √ ... with some near misses and lesser losses plus plenty of armor.

#8 is sailing better every year than I could last year. Some wins, some losses, but it's fun trying. √?

#9 would be breaking the habit of sitting here typing rather than doing more important tasks. I SUCK at that one. No √. [/i]

Hey DC-

Glad to hear you're coming back to Hatteras! This Spring is going to be crazy fun, with a ton of clinics/parties/all sorts of stuff getting planned... Anyway, the Reef is a great place to sail to. There's a guide and a Pre-GoPro Era Helmet Cam Video from back in the day posted on my website. Here's the link:

http://wind-nc.com/2010/03/soundside-guide-the-reef/

Let us know when you're in town and we'll keep our eyes out for a good day to go. The day in the video was about 4.0 and NNE if I remember correctly, with medium sized waves. The more NW the wind gets, the bigger the waves usually get.

Bring a buddy or two, or maybe we'll organize a group trip when you're around. The Reef is a great Bucket List item that's very attainable- Let's make it happen!

Outstanding. The Reef was on my list years ago, and was worth it. Take advantage of Andy as a guide! (Mark Skelton was mine.)

Meanwhile I read "windsurfing bucket" and thought about this:

A few years ago we gave them out as prizes at the East Coast Windsurfing Festival.

Sweeeet, the more, the merrier, when out at the Reef!! And we don't discriminate based on the number of fins you have!

Oh, I forgot to add my personal bucket list stuff- Although it's terribly difficult to leave Hatteras, I really want to get down to San Carlos Baja at some point, and I'd love to catch a PWA event live at Pozo- Seeing 50 foot high triple forward loop attempts is waaay more dramatic in person than on youtube!!

The most serious item on my bucket list is windsurfing at least once in each of the 50 states. In July Alaska became my 40th. The last ten can be done in two trips this year: Oklahoma, Mississippi, & Louisiana in late June, and this fall will be the time for a trip that will cover West Viriginia, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont & New Hampshire and I'll have all 50. I started in Wisconsin in 1984 but didn't have the idea of doing all 50 until sometime in the mid or late 90's.

It would be even better to compete in at least one organized race in each of the 50 states, but I've raced in only 8 states and I think there are several states that don't have organized races.

For me, would like to throw down on a full-on Formula rig and just motor way out into nowhere.

So much weed around here that a seemingly doable concept not fiscally responsible

that's one cool bucket list item and awesome that you're so far along! I think I've windsurfed in 9 states... was able to knock two states off my list on my inaugural trip to Lake Mohave a few weeks ago (sailing back and forth over the NV-AZ border) Very Happy
