|
|
One of the other topics got me thinking:
"not to start up a crazy thread here but it is possible for the two variations of windsports to co exist. "
I keep hearing this, and I just wonder if there really is animosity one way or the other?
I personally have never had any issue with kiters, and with decline of windsurfing, I'm actually pretty glad to see em so I don't have to sail alone all the time. So kiters are OK with me; their slow kites are pretty....
Since it's likely that we all have to work together to ensure launch/water access, it seems like we should be working together. Is there serious resentment between sailors & kiters, like there clearly is with skiers & snowboarders (still), or is it just a friendly rivalry, like between colleges?

Can only speak for myself, some of my best friends are Kiters,
and there appears to be little or no animosity, here in Utah. I'm
usually not sailing where the Kiters are in the Gorge.

The bigger problem is with some individuals, not with what toy they choose. |

I like sailing with kiters. I like watching them sometimes. I respect my friends who have paid their dues and made the switch - it sounds like a painful process. I don't like them telling me all about kiting and that I should learn to kite.

I agree on both counts, John, but I've had as much hassle as you describe, on both counts, from WSers as I have kiters. Thus little bias here ... yet. |

Hmm, kiters to me seem like well-mannered adult 'punk' wannabe's
Living their 2nd adolescence....
I met a kiter last season who runs a local kiting forum website (masskite.com). Very nice guy, long-time WS'er, now crossed over and was selling some gear. One thing he mentioned he LOVES about kiting is simply the size of the community, opportunity for friendship (bro-mance?), etc.
I checked out the website later, some of his buddies were ribbing him about finally selling his WS gear. Comments started showing up like:
"Wha, do ppl still buy that sh*t?"
"Doesn't that dood know WS has been cancelled"?
Etc. etc. Gotta hate the attitude of ppl like that!
To be fair, a few kiters posted saying, "I used to WS -- it's much harder!".
Anyhoo, I see kiters as relatively harmless folks who think wearing boardshorts OVER their wetsuit is the modern-day equivalent of wearing the collar on their POLO shirt in the "up" position.
(But, I can't consider them 'sailors' either...) |

I have some experience with people who have had a religious conversion,
and to me it seems very similar to Kite conversion. They can get on
your nerves, but once you realize that what they want is to share their
joy with you, it's pretty easy to listen to. Even easier if you have a
sense of humor.
Just my .02,

ZZZZZZZZZZ................
This issue should be sent to Congress immediately!.
It is the perfect topic for our current system of non-Government. Let them debate about it for 4 years, and not actually do anything about it.
Evans has convinced me that the problem is simply humans..... _________________ https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=2&v=zw0MgkO7VXw |
