Looks like things are moving along quite nicely on an original and inventive project. The decision to use another fin for the base wasn't something that I thought about. Definitely a novel idea. How did you nullify the foil in the fin used for the base? Also, is the lamination stage now complete?

Please let us know how things progress.

Using the fin as a base, was a matter of material on hand. I have been doing a couple fin conversions, so I had epoxy ready to use, I laid some carbon on the beveled base to build it up, then let the dog have it for a day or 2 to even out Smile

sanded down.

The whole thing has a lot of carbon, in small pieces that need to be shaped down, it may want another coat to fill in.

Out of curiosity, I went back and looked at the original photos of the board and fin. It appears that the original fin has a rounded base at either end, and that the fin is positioned in the middle of the overall length. However, from your most recent photo, the base is clearly rectangular, and the fin is moved back from centerpoint. Given the differences, I can see why it's a question in your mind. Hopefully the new base is long enough where you can round the ends, and also position the rear hole attachment point without interfering with the fin.

If it turns out that the base as currently configured doesn't quite fit, the beauty of working with epoxy and fiberglass/carbon composites allows you the opportunity to rebuild or re-cast the base using what you have now. So no loss, just maybe some more work ahead.

100% correct on all counts.

Leaving some room to fiddle when I go. The fin position I had a senior moment, its further back, I did not account for the tongue on the fin base when I routed out the base.

it seems strong.

this is the replacement fin next to the original one.

It was very quick and easy to fit, needing 2 holes to be drilled to secure, and rounding of the ends to fit, easy peasy with a sander.

installed and ready to go.

I had not sailed this cruiser for 3/4 years and it is really lots of fun.

High wind , NO, 1--15mph so much fun. I used a HotSails Maui Superfreak 5.8 and it was worked ever so well.
