We just got back from St Martin and had a good time windsurfing (low wind) and surfing. The place is Windy Reef at Gallion Bay on the french side. No jet skiis, no kites, no cruise ship tourists, just flat water!!! They have kids surfing school on the outside reef. They are probably closed August & September.

We just got back from a family vacation in Saint Martin in March, 2011 We found no wind for the two weeks we were there. I was there twice before in 1984 and again in 1995. those visits I had wind of 20 mph and fun 4 foot waves at the edge the surfing reef off the Le Galion beach. this trip I visited the Tropical Wave rental shack every day. The owner was very nice and insisted they still had lots of days with good conditions
tropicall Wave has lots of Fanatic Allwave boards 81, 92, 93, 95, Fanatic Hawk in 120, 135. Sails are by North, and Severne. In every size rigged on separate masts a booms in a covered shack. including a kids rig with an an ultrakinny mast. The boards and sails are all in excellent, brand new condition
There is a Vela rental center right around the corner at Orient point. They also have brand new gear in every size. The orient point bay location is more slalom sailing. Le Galion has calm inside for lessons, slalom in the lagoon and wavesailing on the reef.

if one wants to sail out of le gallion, where would be a good place to stay?

orient beach looks too busy for me, but i'd like to be on the water.

any suggestions?

The Alamanda resort at Orient Point is a very nice resort. You can walk from there to Le Galion (wear water shoes ) The courtyard there has a nice selection of excellent restaurants.
Orient beach is only really busy on days the cruise ships come in.
If you do not stay at Orient beach, you will have to drive to Le Galion from another town.
