In the long term, we will need to work at getting the law changed. In the interim though, we have won a "special accommodation" from Lake Patrol as follows: instead of continuing to require one permit per each board we bring, the regional chief, and local Lake Patrol, as personified by Sergeant Eades, agree to allow windsurfers and kitesailors to use one permit only per rider, AS LONG AS SAID PERMIT IS ON BOARD WHEN ON THE WATER, AND CAN BE PRODUCED UPON DEMAND. Which mechanism exactly we chose to use for the carrying of this permit is up to us to decide upon, and then to notify Lake Patrol of our decision.
The permit itself will remain unchanged, i.e. consist of a self-adhesive 3x3" bit of vinyl. We might each of us stick that to a more substantial piece of plastic, punch a hole for a bit of line, then clip it to our harnesses/swimsuits/what-have-you - let's have some creative ideas!
This is a special accommodation, and I strongly urge every one of us to comply and purchase/carry this one permit!
And if you would spread the word, so all your friends will be aware of this policy change, that would be wonderful!!
Eva

That's great news Eva! Your hard work and time is appreciated. I will pass the word to all that I know who sail there.

Hi Eva: great job on board passes. At Lopez we has them on booms + extensions, but some people may change them with different size sails.
Something that is waterproof and attached to a harness would be great,
as no one seams to change them unless they are blown out completly.

Can you remind us where we can purchase these permits and how much they cost?

Thanks,

Seth

They are $30 and you can buy at Marinas or Ranger station up on hill.

Way to go!!

What is the fine/penalty for not having a pass?

Anyone have past experiences of being stopped and asked to provide the permit?

just curious.. Thanks!

Ski pass style..so clipped to the harness might work. Although it sounds like it may need to be attached to the vessel. Would attached to a spot on the nose or some other innocuous area with velcro strips be considerable? It would be on the vessel and not likely to come off without effort. Also it would transfer to other boards quickly. Just a thought.

as to where you may purchase your permit: around the town of Lake Isabella, at the Shell station kittycorner from the McDonalds, at Isabella Supermarket, and at the Lake Patrol office at the Nuui Cuni Indian Center just past French Gulch (but they are not always there). The ranger station is Forest Service and can sell you a camping permit, but not a lake permit.
As far as where to put them: no, they do not need to be affixed to the board any more. For the time being, anywhere where you can produce it when requested is good. We've been sticking them to bits of plastic (lid off some tupperware or such), then punched a hole, attached a lanyard, and affixed them to our harnesses. Someone just tried sticking it to his helmet, but that is too curvaceous - whatever. At the end of the season, we'll put our heads together and settle on a unified way for 2012.
As far as getting stopped: we asked for it! we will now get lots more attention - as does the rest of the boating public. Parks & Rec is short of funds and finally waking up to the fact that they are owed a whole lot more than they have collected in the past.
