While on family vacation in maui this week i got launched while in my footstraps. Exrays showde 2 broken bones, but the ct scan revealed a lisfranc fracture which is not good.
I would appreciate any doctors to recommend me in the los angelee area as well as any other helpful hints.
A big thanks to everyone at kanaha who helped me, esp rebecca and nancy who carried me ashore.

This serious injury warrants expert care to minimize the chances of very prolonged complications including compartment syndrome. Do not -- and do not let your doctors -- pass it off as "just another fracture". If you didn't already know this, start Googling and make sure you're getting good specialist medical care starting the day of the injury, as Lisfrancs are not simple to diagnose and/or treat by normal "busted ankle" standards.
I first learned of this particular fracture in our threads on sailing with only our front foot in the strap. That's not a prerequisite for a Lisfranc (it's a guy's name), but it sure heightens the risk because this injury is often accomplished by excess pressure on the top of the arch.
Best of luck with it, and stay on top of your docs to make sure they understand its potential for complications.

Lisfranc-was the surgeon way back when....the cure was amputation. Injury would occur when falling off a horse stuck in the stirrups. There are varying degrees of injury---hope you do not have a bad one. Back in the '80s, I over-rotated a forward and lisfranced my rear foot. Soft walking cast wuith crutches for 6 weeks minimum, keep it elevated as much as you can, get that swelling down. Happened late may, was sailing again by 2nd week of august. It will hurt for years and then some. While it is fully healed it is about 90%.In the '80s all they could do was fuse everything together for a cure----that's in the case of a real bad one. Went skiing last year, cranked down too hard on the boots, and it hurt for a week. |

If you were in the bay area, I would recommend Dr Oloff at the SOAR clinic, don't know any in LA..
I had 3rd degree Lisfranc back in '97 in Margaret River, back foot in the strap on a floater. Spent a couple of days in the hospital in Perth & got 3 screws put in to hold it together... I was on crutches for a month or so & out of the water for 4. Then the next year the screws started to back out & went for another surgery to have them removed. The past 10 years it's been OK for the most part, but it does hurt like hell the day after a good session.. the good thing is that it doesn't really seem to be getting worse yet.
Good luck!

Hey Jonah...
Haven't seen you since you were making boards in '01 or so. Good to see you're still alive.
I was the KineticRep for a while in those years, and worked SausalitoSailboards with Tom in the mid '80's.
Domond here, LeeD. Are you still pro kiting and windsurfing?

I don't know that they have a specialist for this type of fracture, but I've had good luck with Kerlan-Jobe (http://www.kerlanjobe.com/home/) for compression fractures in my back, ilio-tibial band syndrome and a few other orthopedic and sports related issues.
Having first provided the website, I then looked at it and they do say they treat the lisfranc condition |

Thanks for the replies and sharing past experiences and present conditions after healing. I have an appointment with a.dr.barbavarian who has done dozens of lisfranc surgerys. I hope he says it is not too sreious.
I will definetly call kerlan-jobe clinic as well.
Hopefully ill be om the water in time for the august winds at leo.

Hey Ian,
I saw you getting helped to shore that day at Kanaha. Glad to hear you are on the road to recovery. I know from experience it sucks to be on vacation and have a misshape but it seems to be a common injury from what i have seen over the years.
Good luck!

My lisfranc fracture happened in May of 1997 @ Arroyo Laguna on a very windy, sub 4.0 day. After two orthopedists missed the lisfranc fracture and about a month of healing I convinced them to take another x-ray and the fracture was now apparent. They went in and put three screws to hold it together and just let scar tissue hold it all together. I was on crutches form Memorial Day to early August. My first session post surgery was the last week of August at Kanaha and I sailed 13 out of 15 days. It beat the heck out of my foot but it still worked.
14 years later it still hurts when I flex the foot too much when gardening or hiking. Cold weather is not my friend and some days it just takes a while to get it flexible and moving. Bottom line, it is 90%+ and I can still sail, bike and ski.
Good luck in the healing but remember, life can still go on. Best advice is get the best foot surgeon you can find. It is about the worst break you can have because they can't really "fix" it back to normal. |
