Seems like the last 3 weeks winds have shut down...
Any chance of winds over the next couple of weeks?? To those of you that are there for the long stay.
was considering heading to Maui for a few sessions,
Thanks for any input, to me not worth going if no chance of winds, would prefer to save myself the frustrations. If you can help please post...
Thanks in advance, Max |

Maui is in a light wind pattern right now. I'd book last minute, and wait until forecast is east @ 20 for 3 days in a row. ticket prices are high now but last minute fares will drop over the next few weeks as the holidays wind down.
Very important to book rental car as early as possible. They can be cancelled free of charge at any time. There is a shortage over there because so many thinned their fleets. |

Looks like the wind might be back today, and for the rest of the week. My experience is that forecasting "sailable" on east wind days that might be light is like trying to forecast if "Crissy Field" will be sailable if there is some fog in the city. I've seen days with very light easterlys forecast, and then becoming sailable with a 5.0, wave board, and 200# guy.
Here are my links for weather in Maui:

Waves and wind. If the direction is right, that is the most important part of this report, (plus the waves!!)

We've been having an UNREAL time surfing and SUP'ing in Maui this season. The La Nina is resulting in more northerly swells which make Maui
go off!
BTW, the El Nino was supposed to have shut down the winds somewhat, and the La Nina is supposed to pick up the winds.

What about the north shore vs the south shore this time of year. I'll be in Maui the end of next week and from the graphs it looks like Kihei is often windier than the North Shore in January? Also will there be any problems renting gear or getting a lesson (I have no wave sailing experience) without an advance reservation this time of year? |

North or south will depend on the day. Many locals hardly ever venture to the south shore for wind. The water texture and wave situation are totally different sailing Kihei versus the north shore. There should be no problems finding gear or lessons. In terms of advance reservation, I doubt the wind sports places will be full. Try these places for lessons and give them a call to check on availability:
Matt Pritchard: http://www.pritchardwindsurfing.com/
HST and Alan Cadiz: http://www.hstwindsurfing.com/
Tell them that Justin sent you!
And definitely consider SUP'ing (or cycling) on light wind days!

If the wind direction is North to NE Kihei can be windier. East wind is far more productive on the N shore. Don't worry about the surf at Kanaha. The reef is 1/2 mile outside. Hookipa sometimes even works on an ese day, but it is not for the non wave sailor. |

Yes, but I'd rather sail 3' swell on a 5.0 than 4' swell on a 6.5 when the N shore is hurting for wind. Those locals are probably wave snobs ... not that there's anything wrong with that ... and miss a lot of days that blow pretty well off Kihei. They're making an informed choice, but we wouldn't want the OP thinking it's light at Kihei just because it's light at Kanaha. Except for its lack of waves, I often prefer Kihei to Kanaha/Sprecks just to get away from the mob scene. I've had some magical days sailing all over Kihei Bay from below the Star Market up to to Speed Beach and out west of Maalaea, hammered on a 3.2, without any other WSers in sight anywhere. I've never been impressed with Kanaha/Sprecks swell anyway except in the actual wave spots, which are often elbow to elbow.

I suggest the OP does worry about Kanaha if its waves are onshore, generally a wintertime thing. I've been there when a tourist got killed and another airlifted out because they ignored the high surf warning signs and ventured out underpowered on 6.0s in surf high enough to expose the reefs. What's that take ... 3-4 feet Hawaii style (6+ faces)? |

What's with the OP (origin poster) thing?
Folks post under an identity, and I think it's important when offering a personal comment to that individual, it makes good sense to recognize them accordingly. |

Many locals prefer not sailing in very strong winds in waves. The ideal wave conditions are just enough power to plane comfortably. Any more is a disadvantage. I bet other wave sailors would rather be on a 5.0 than "hammered" on a 3.2 any day. And that applies to freestyle folks as well. However, if you're content to simply sail back and forth, hanging on for your life, then I guess hammered on a 3.2 will be good for you.
