Tonight at 6PM WBZ TV reported that a Great White was seen today, 2 miles north of the Chatham inlet(they didn't clarify which inlet).
So they are pretty much on schedule, since the 1st shark sighting usually occurs between mid-July and mid-August.
Try not to look like a seal when you are out there and they'll probably leave you alone |

The whole town/paper Chamber of Commerce angle is SO Amityville.
We got the Science Guy, the Harpooner, we are just waiting for the Chief Brody to declare him or herself.
They are basically covering it all. Come, spend your money, go in the ocean, but if you get bit, don't say we didn't tell you.
I'm loving all of it......The beaches are closed for Plovers, the Seals are eating all the Fish, and now, the Landlord is cleaning house. I say let them gorge themselves now, so that when the Outer beach opens, and the hurricane swells and oil slicks arrive at the same time for truly epic glassy conditions, the Dark Lords of the Deep will be sitting around burping, cleaning their teeth, and thinking about trips to Cancun
How many seals can YOU eat? _________________ https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=2&v=zw0MgkO7VXw |

We are NOT closing the beaches, but we do recommend that:
"beachgoers and swimmers pay close attention to their surroundings while in the water and to not venture too far from shore,"

I recall watching a pod of orcas cruise through the water as I rode the bus from Whistler to Vancouver. I also recall thinking that I'd much rather fight a shark than one of those black and white eating machines. At least most sharks provides a fighters chance. Not so much with a pack of orcas.
It presents a choice between two equally brutal realities, not dissimilar to whether one prefers to die by stoning or Claymore.
Despite the horror show of life and death in nature or, perhaps, because we often think of ourselves as "part of the food chain" when sailing in certain locations, windsurfing offers a unique dose of that reality. We are truly alive when we windsurf. I once sailed at the Hook near Cape Hatteras and saw flashes of sand sharks swimming within and outside the break. What a feeling. I could hardly believe about 50 others and I were sailing waves in the midst of sharks which we actually could see underneath the water.
Call me a wimp but I was simultaneously scared and enlivened. I suspect that combination makes windsurfers part of a very small group of people. |
