pulling or pushing the board off via the front strap as JE suggests creates a board pump while sail pumping, i think the water flow created over the fin in
any fashion creates lift. i once saw dunkerbeck (100kg) sail and board pump 100l slalom board with 7,8 onto a plane in all of 12mph of wind, blast out 500yds,jibe,plane back, only to declare "there is not enough wind to sail".
the freestylers are always planing because of volume, they are out on 100l while we are dicking around with 85l. the year matt pritchard won king of the cape,in light wind, he said that his custom board was about 130l , although that isn't what the graphics said.

I see them every year when I go down to Baja. The truth is most people are sailing overpowered. It takes x amount of power to get planning and less power once you are out of the hole and up on a plane. Get in a boat and punch it. Once on a plane you back off the throttle so you are not just wasting fuel.
Anyway you can sail how ever you want. I could care less. |
Huh? I complement you ("#5 is simply a far better sailor than I, or most other people, will ever be. More power -- in a different sense -- to them."), and you go all, like, you know ... snippy? What'd I do this time?
Yup ... Gorge ... and about 15 other mainland and offshore states and countries. As for the Gorge, only the very best "efficiency experts" can excel here, and the penalty usually includes oversized boards, lots of isometric hula dancing, limited maneuverability, and excessive slogging, none of which is a pretty sight on a nice WFO 3.5 day. On a day like that, why would anyone want to "back off the throttle"? I keep plenty of fuel (carbs) in my pantry.

I would rather sail a larger fin or a larger board before a larger sail any time. I don't even notice a difference between my 100L and 90L boards...
Ruffie, your still too far south, Southern Maine coast is where it's happening this weekend! |
