That's all that matters.
I'm sure Col. Klink will be happy to jump on board this one! |

I live in SF, have known the family for years, and Im not thrilled by her performance. The previous speaker was Dennis Hastert, are you kidding? Is this the best we got? I still cant figure out how someone becomes speaker. |

That's Major, not Col.
And, no, she's too easy a target to waste my time on. Asked what's in this new health bill, her response was, "We have to pass this bill so you can see what's in it." She should be in prison. This is our country, not hers.
But, geez, guys, don't knock her articulation. It's generally no worse than Obama's when he's caught without his teleprompters.

misogyny from the right Quote: | Hell, Pelosi's wearing her dead sister's face."? and she looks pretty good for a woman of her vintage(if a little frozen at times)Hell, Pelosi's wearing her dead sister's face."? Is so revealing. Could we find something nice to say about Newt that we could rest ultimately on his looks? Maybe we should ignore his vile pronouncements and just talk about his weight? |

Are you referring to me and Iso, or Pelosi and Iso? If it's me, I would prefer Eierkopf.........unfortunately, I don't think there is a Swahili translation. |

Mr G, I am referring to the two in mo's cartoon. You might recognize another infamous iW poster in the background. |

Isobars ranted: Quote: | Well, you gotta give up something (besides much higher taxes and health care premiums for almost everyone) to fund socialized medicine, GW, free party time (aka college) for everybody, increased welfare for families with incomes up to $82,800, |
This thread started not with socialized medicine, but education. I work as a volunteer in a grade school, teaching first graders to read and 5th graders reading, writing, and advanced math. California and the nation need aspects of educational reform where I think that Bush's instincts were good, but follow-through miserable. But that shouldn't obscure the facts, which is what Iso and mrgybe try to do. Here's the math--which most of my fifth graders could understand.
1. California is very low in spending per capita. That is adjusted by state income, but it is also more expensive to live here. Whether we are 30th, 40th, or 48th is unimportant--the relative amount is going down.
2. Because of Proposition 13, the State has taken over about 27% of education funding. It represents about 52-55% of the State's overall budget. http://www.dof.ca.gov/budgeting/budget_faqs/#7 It has dropped by about $7 billion since the recession started.
3. You can get slightly different numbers from what appears to be a libertarian site
http://www.usgovernmentspending.com/california_state_spending.html
which seems to show local spending too, but has different numbers than the Department of Finance. ($137 billion total spending vs. $85 billion respectively, about the same for schools).
4. Something has to give; State revenues dropped by nearly 30%. My Democratic friends in the legislature say that is because Arnold ended the car fees. Nonsense, that is about 1/3 of the structural deficit. The growth of programs needs to be slowed as well.
5. A very large number of California's school children come from below the poverty line. No Cadillacs, they get to school on the bus if there is still money this month. Almost all of the children that I am working with that are below to well below poverty level come to school not ready to learn, usually emotionally. Parental/grandparental defensiveness, a sense the the education system is fixed for those who already have money, homes with no stability (even to sleep, much less to study or be supported in studying or reading), bad food (have you ever seen a kid on Cheetos?) and similar problems abound. More than 40% of these kids qualify for a free lunch and breakfast. At the higher grade level, constant class disruption by kids with emotional issues is the biggest barrier. Private schools can handle this problem--they kick the kids out and don't try to educate them.
6. Some programs work, some don't. I work with the reading recovery specialist, and we teach kids to read. It works. The barriers are kids missing up to 1/3 of the school days--slows them down--and then not continuing to read. But what I do is different with my first graders that read at a third grade level and those that can't yet read words longer than 3 letters.
7. Some charter schools make dramatic improvements, but overall they actually lag behind public schools.
8. There's nothing left to cut in the State budget to increase education, or limit the impact of further cuts. Healthcare and welfare are the next big category, but welfare only totals $20 billion, and half of that is unemployment. Oh, and did I tell you that nearly half of the kids are below the poverty line. Not the story that Isobars tells.
9. And of course we've stopped maintaining the road network that helped build the wealth. Transportation at the State level is $10.7 billion, and about 50% higher among all the local governments. The good news is that when the potholes get big enough, and the cars small enough, we will have plenty of parking for them in the potholes.
10. And then there's the corrections budget, now the most rapidly growing sector of California government. As the old ad says, you can pay me now, or you can pay me later.
When I was a seventeen and working my first real jobd, I had a boss that didn't have any children and didn't want to support education. Isobars is the same kind of selfish, and makes up stories that justify his meanness. (free partying). Certainly there are students who don't get much out of college, but how do we know that up front? It was investment in education and roads that built California into one of the strongest economies in the world, and we've either forgotten that, or we just don't care.
Do the math Iso. |
