since monday the surf has been too big and stormy so ocean sailing has not been on the agenda for mere mortals. |

Went out today up at Gladstones' on PCH. Promptly got devoured on the way out and broke a mast. At least I tried!
PS: anyone in the SoCal area got a 440 or 460 to spare?? |

It cleared really strongly at Seal from 2-5 p.m. today. 20 to 36 averaging 28 WSW. Super-gnarly conditions with mixed SE wind swell and 8 foot West swell. Didn't see a soul out.
Did anyone try at Seal, Sunset or Cabrillo?

Sunset on Monday, Belmont on Tuesday, San Clemente on Wednesday,
Belmont Today (see us on Chanel 2 News tonight) and who knows where on the rest of the week....maybe in the emergency de-tox chamber to remove the embeded toxins...
Oops....maybe I should have posted this on ikitesurf! |

Good for you on trying. More balls than the rest of us.
I think as soon as there is some west in the wind you would have been better off at Topanga than Sunset/Gladstones. At Topanga I would launch at the point (yes, bacteria levels from the river mouth ), and then head slightly downwind to get into the clean non broken surf area as quickly as possible - the waves curve in very nicely off the point making this usually not a problem.
Anyone try Leo yesterday? The wind graph looked sailable. |

Nobody sailed Leo, but Billy was at 1st point. It was much more under control there. |

On Monday I went out at Gladstone's as well, but there was already too much west, and not enough point at Gladstone's. I had to hike east along the rocks to get to any wind. Yesterday was WSW and the fetch was parallel to the east rock, so plenty of wind right at the inner corner. Only problem launching was the higher tide left no sand. I had to wait for low water to walk out on rock tops, then wait for high water and the right break timing to launch. Standing on two rocks in waist deep wave wash and 25mph wind was not easy, and I pretty much launched when I got sucked in, rather than when I wanted to. Part of how I ended up heading out into big surf.
But the tack out was exactly as you'd imagined; reach was parallel to the break, broad allowed me to run away from it, upwind pinch allowed me to jump the breaks. It was all told a pretty smooth launch out.
My mistake (other than going out at all) was when I thought I'd cleared the break, and was being approached by the next big swell (it was easily a logo to mast high wave) I thought I had room to bear off what I thought was a random wave crest break In reality, I was RIGHT in the break and that small wave crest turned into a total break that ate me as I basically beared off right into the break zone. Shoulda' pinched up wind and charged the beast, would have beat it to its own break, albeit launching straight up. Not enough balls, ironically! Really mostly wave sailing inexperience on my part.
I learned, and next time out chances are the conditions will be less extreme, so I figure I'm ahead, just less a mast.
[edit]But, yes, Topanga has more of a point and one easier to get to, which allows you to achieve the same launch but with room to sail parallel to the break to get out past it, so far more ideal a launch site for the SW to W. |
