|
|
So I finally got a JP freestyle board but was wondering if people had recommendations about the footstraps and adjustment.
The JP stock straps seem pretty lame but I was wondering if anyone was using them for freestyle or recommended them or another like the Dakine contour straps vs adjustable contour straps.
Lastly for freestyle all the commentaries talk about going as big as possible with the straps ? almost touching your ankle so your feet don't come out trying freestyle but some people talk about the width so tight so that it pinches your feet and leaving space between the top of your foot and the top of the strap to prevent ankle and foot injuries. Any thoughts? |

I think straps are a very personal thing, but for me the non-adjustable dakine contours are the best and it's not even close. I also tried a set of adjustable contours, and those weren't even close to being workable. |

Here is my *personal* choice regarding footstraps. Take this advice at your own risk as I disclaim any responsibility for what happens to other peoples feet.
I currently use a 2006 JP Freestyle Pro 109L with the original stock footstraps. The footstraps are mounted at the furthest inward and forward holes and set so loose that my feet are almost swimming in them. This is so that my feet come out easily when something goes awry--which it often does. So far this has worked well no matter how twisted up I have gotten after a crash.
Alternatively, to set up for speed or fast free-riding (which I don't care about), the footstraps are better mounted at the furthest outward and aft holes and set so tight that only your toes can barely poke through. In this case, it makes more sense to use something other than a freestyle board. Nevertheless, this setup also helps ensure that the feet pop out of the straps easily when things goes bad. I personally never set my straps this way, but it is often the de-facto setting when I borrow someone elses board because I have big feet.
The only time I have ever hurt my feet is when the footstraps were set somewhere between those two extremes. It was particularly bad when my foot went fully into the strap but were quite snug over the top of my foot above the arch. Crashing with that setup has hurt quite a lot, both to my foot and ankle. Luckily this only brought me close to, but not quite fully spraining my ankle.
Cheers,
Christopher |

I'm no freestyle guru, but I do have two JP board (FSW 84 and FS 90) and am pretty happy with the stock JP footstraps. Yes, I do run them big - so my foot goes in all the way to the ankle. More snug on the width than the top as you mentioned. I find this helps me to get my weight more over the board. When jumping or doing aerial tricks, you learn to crank your toes up to keep your feet locked in.
If you search the forum, there are several threads devoted to footstraps.

I have to say that I also changed all my foot straps to the contour ones. Keep them large. Really comfortable in all conditions. Equipped all my boards with them. Tried the JP, MFC, Dakine Primo and now fully sold on the contour |
