Is there any chance we could have a third ave type park there? It doesn't seem like too much to ask, does it? Or am I dreaming? We only need a little access area and could make a launch.

I have no idea how the third ave park came to be, for that matter how the sites at Rio came to be, but there must have been lessons learned there about how to pull these things off. T.I. could be the premier windsurfing spot in the bay some day.

The master plan for Treasure Island includes a substantial park, with windurfing access, on the north shore of TI. (see http://www.sftreasureisland.org/index.aspx?page=26#land) and follow the hot links to the revised master plan.) San Francisco Boardsailing Association (SFBA) has worked hard to make sure that access is protected and enhanced, and policies to assure that are now part of the master plan adopted by the City of San Francisco, which has authority over TI, and the Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC) which must approve the City's projects on the shore.

While good policies are in place that assure eventual public access, the clean up takes priority in the legal system for now. The Navy still owns the land, and it isn't transferred to the City until clean. The Development Agreements by the City will require access improvements, but those could be as much as ten years down the road. So the current effort has been to get access during the clean-up.

Jim McGrath, Vice President, SFBA
